I'll come clean   .....not a big blues fan myself. Some of it is fine, but I can realte to what the OP is saying.

I grew up listening to AC/DC, Maiden, Scorps, UFO, Priest, Ratt, Dokken, etc. I get there's all sorts of blues influence in that stuff....believe me...I get it :D ......but.....straight blues is definitely NOT my thing.

That's all fine and good, but that's not the point. Not liking something and not respecting something for the influence it's had on what you do like are two different things and I think that's the point people are trying to get across here. Nobody cares about the OP's likes and dislikes, they care that he is stating that the blues is basically one dimensional and of no worth.

Oh dude...I get it completely. :D

Basically it is O.K. for you to not like something but not accept some one doesn't like your thing or some one will get upset and challenge you to post clips..

I've got 3 words and a hyphen to sum up this whole thread:

rare, that first tune sounds like the ramblings of a senile guy using a newspaper to keep warm.

No matter what his economical state, what does that have to with talent? Shameful.

Original blues (Little Walter, Muddy, Lightning Hopkins, BB, RJ, etc.) = pure awesome.

Shitty bar bands in Austin (or anywhere for that matter) thinking they are SRV = total failure.

The latter is what killed the blues for me. The 90s were a horrible, horrible, time in Austin local music. Every fuckballs with a Strat thought he could play Little Wing like SRV. You could literally walk down 6th street and hear the same songs in different bars.

Damn... I'm sure glad you didn't hear the version I posted a week or so ago...

Of course..., I wasn't trying to play the SRV version and know I couldn't anyway...

If Eric Clapton is God, then I'm the Holy Spirit.

Clapton is the reason why we have rock/metal music to begin with. His work with Cream was the start of the rock band movement and the start of guitar virtuosos. Hell, his solo on Crossroads was like THE solo that launched the careers of Eddie and the like....

Meh. You're giving him far too much credit. I'm not taking anything away from the guy's commercial success, nor his heroin addiction, but he wasn't really all that and a bag of chips. Very much overrated.

We judge talent differently, my friend. I don't think "Wow, it's so original and soulful, what a life that man must have lived. Every experience and hardship he's ever gone thru has permeated his music." I'm a little more analytical about it.

He did some tasty playing in Cream but I've always felt Clapton to be horribly overrated. He is absolutely not the main reason we have rock/metal music that we have today IMO. Hendrix crushes him in this regard and so does Pete Townshend. Ron Asheton, Tony Iommi also to me did a lot more to shape rock and metal to come than Clapton. Even the guy from Cactus was gnarlier.

I also think your statement about the validity of the blues is retarded but agree that after SRV blues was painfully cookie cutter. The blues is not about technical prowess or breaking barriers in technique. It's about a feeling. Holdsworth for all is avant-gard technical ability makes me feel as much as planning my laundry.

Live a little, bro. Try doing your laundry spontaneously next time.

I'm not gonna rant. That's old Torquil. New Torquil says this.

*Sigh* :jerkit:

I realize that EVERYONE on this forum thinks Holmes is a troll. And he likely is.

But over all of the years I've lurked this place all I see are 80's-era Metalheads and shredders post stuff about what they love (I'm an 80's guy myself).

Can you see the pack mentality of this place?

One guy says blues is predictable and EVERY ONE OF YOU pile on?

You guys dont listen to blues. Yeah, you can appreciate it. But you dont listen to it.

Same with Keith Urban or Django.

Pack mentality keeps me from ever caring much about forums.

Cant you see it?

That's ridiculous.

I didn't pile onto anybody and neither did many others. I just shared an opinion about what he said, which I thought was the whole purpose of these forums. And he didn't just say blues was predictable, he nullified it as an art form - there is a difference. Also, how the hell do you know what I (or anyone else here) listen(s) to? I like 80s hard rock as much as the next guy here, but my musical tastes go far beyond it in both directions...
