I've realized I'm just a Strat guy

I prefer the Strat shape, or derivatives (Dinky, RG, etc.) and the 25.5" scale, they are just what feels best. I love the sound of a good Les Paul or PRS, but they are not as comfortable for me to play on. To each their own.

It's not about which one is better, it's about picking the right one for the application. :D

Sure, but when you're playing hard rock and metal, it's humbuckers. I don't dislike single coils for leads but for rhythm, i hate the mushy tone of a single coil. For instance, Yngwie's rhythm tone....always disliked it.

thats because yngwie's running his non master full tilt and a DOD pedal which tends to get flubby also he doesnt play rhythm like in those old cd's. you can get an outstanding rhythm hard rock sound on that YJM guitar or with other Strat/ noiselesss singles on the market, with the right pedal and amp and attitiude. without a doubt. I've played van halen tunes with them and they kick ass. its all preference though and style, but I dont disagree with a Les Paul fat sounds, I love em for heavy chunky chunk rhythm and for jazz bebop clean style, but rock soloing wise, singles are it for me.

I have never really been knocked out by a PRS. I feel more comfortable on a strat or LP than a PRS. I guess I really just don't dig the sound they are going for.
Ya, I've never really liked them either. I want to, but just don't like how they play. They are beautiful, have good quality fret work, and sound really good, but I just don't like how they play.

I was at the local GC, and tried (yet again) a PRS with a solid rosewood neck, compared it to a $10k Les Paul and a custom shop Tele, and I liked the Tele much better than the others.

Stratocasters are "it" for me. All I need is a good Stratocaster and a Marshall. My #1 is heavenly. Perfect for everything.

Strats rule  I just love the way that Strats and SuperStrats play and feel.

(Insert stupid comparison here)

More like humbucker = automatic transmission and single coil = manual transmission. You might have to work a bit harder with a single coil, but the tone that comes out is absolutely glorious.

Depends on what kind of music you're playing. I never use a bridge position single coil for anything, so I'd rather have an H/S/S Strat.

To the original post... yeah I'm with you. PRS makes a great high quality guitar but I just don't like the feel of them. Love a nice Strat. But while I'm talking about what guitars I like, my latest aquisition, my EBMM JP6 BFR is hands down my sweetest guitar to play.

When it comes to real Fender Strats, despite the model/price range, it's all about finding that one great Strat. An ex-friend of mine has a Seafoam Green strat that played like a dream. I had it for a month or so, and never put it down. I cried when he took it back   It was so good, it made me play better. I could sweep effortlessly on it. Wrote some arpeggio runs that I've used a lot since then with that guitar.

I'll have to call him up and see if I can get it from him after my next paycheck. I've always wanted too, but I just don't *need* it. I need a big heavy guitar with 'buckers. A 'Paul or an explorer. Then maybe I can splurge on a strat. Really for me, my RG770 w/ split coils really gets the job done. I need to switch out the pups in that thing. It doesn't sound nearly as good as my Ibby Artcore w/ GFS Chruncy Rails and a Mean P-90 in it.

I'm still unsure what type of guitar fits me. I've had GAS for Vs, Explorers, and seven-strings lately.

I have guitars with both and love them for different things/reasons. That said, anybody who thinks that you can't get cool heavy tones with singles simply hasn't heard the right guitar/rig combo.

Strats are ok, as long as they have humbuckers in them.

You're insane. That rude and "in your face" tone of a good single coil is awesome.

Single coil.

Humbuckers.

Yeah, you are right. The camaro driver/humbucker user is clearly compensating for something else.

Ive got a Strat that I put a set of Kinman Woodstock single coils and they have the quacky Strat vibe to them but when you dig into them they really put out.

Interesting debate. I've been wanting the spank and shimmer of a strat-proper for years now, but every time I tried a true Fender strat on, I couldn't jive with it. The guitar may have had mojo, I may have the mojo, but together? Absolute bunk. But I really really wanted the maple neck, single coil spank, know what I mean? I'm not a fan of PRS, I think they're overrated, I am a fan of Lesters, and have a number of killer LP's and LPC's, I _like_ my ESP's, and just recently, STILL on the search for that Strat-proper groove minus the Fender anti-groove, I tried on a Suhr S4. I am SO happy I did. Don't know what it is that's so different about it, but it fits me, plays super well, sound incredible, and feels perfect. Job done, just not a Fender. Go figure.

It's been getting the most play for the last month, equally tied with my triple pup Lester Black Beauty and my NT-II.

Peace,
V.

I hear what you are saying about finding the right guitar for you.

A few years ago I realized I'm a Rickenbacker guy. My guitar of choice is Rickenbacker. I only have one guitar and one bass that aren't Rics.

totally can understand that. I end up getting rid of every other body shape eventually. V's, Explorers, Firebirds, Stars and now I have two Mockingbirds that I'm getting rid of. The strat shape body just fits my body like a glove. I'm not too keen on stock s-s-s strats but is hard to argue the strat shape has been the coolest shape since 1954 and still just as cool :)

Isn't it incredible to think about how much cars, clothes, and home styles have changed since 1954...

Yet the Strat is virtually the same as it was in 1954, and STILL looks awesome.

That still baffles my mind.

THAT is SO true ! I was trying to explain to a non musician female once that a Fender Stratocaster is one of the VERY few things that is like this.

And it's not just nostalgia- a lot of people think that one from the sixties or fifties is actually BETTER than anything today...................... I personally don't but the SOUNDS are still awesome by many standards ( with the right amp/pedals,player). Amazing that something made in 1954 is still State -Of -The- Art in 2010.
