A couple years ago started getting into some the of the 80's stuff (I'm 90's kid) that some of you guys love around here. Particularly the stuff with great playing and tones like Sykes, Lynch and Jake E Lee. So...What would be your top songs / albums that define the best of that era in terms of style, playing and tones?

Ratt, Dokken, Jake E Lee Ozzy, Poison stuff would define the driving rock and party rock part of the era. Yngwie would define the virtuoso part of the era. Winger would define the "didn't get enough attention and too much hate" part of the era.

Maiden or Priest define the actual "metal" part, and Metallica and Megadeth would suffice for thrash. I won't include Slayer because I just won't.

Pick any albums from those bands for my list of 20.

I can’t really name albums - I always favored individual songs - but, Warren D rocked. I’m not necessarily a Ratt fan, but his playing is special. He had Eddie’s swing plus creativity that was spectacular…

I agree, also about Winger...
other than that, Queensryche, Tyketto, Warrant

I love Tyketto, but they didn't really do anything new or special. They do have a new album they just released and it sounds killer.

Warrant I'd sort of lump in with a blend of what Poison and Winger was doing. Queensryche I missed. Let's go with they cover the operatic, theatrical part of the era. King Diamond/Mercyful Fate also sort of covers that ground.

Queensryche, Black Sabbath with Dio and Dio's solo stuff, Scorpions, White Lion, Whitesnake, many others

Iron Maiden's Powerslave and Piece of Mind were life changing, as was Judas Priest's Defenders of the Faith, and of course, Master of Puppets.

Y&T never got the recognition they deserved.

Edit to add Accept and Fates Warning. Maybe some more rock stuff like Rough Cutt, Tesla, Great White, early Def Leppard, Kix, Krokus, Mama's Boys, W.A.S.P., Savatage

Rather than list albums, I'm going to list 10 example songs that defined my high school years. This is a morsel of my favorite stuff:
- Riot "Swords and Tequila"
- Scorpions "I'm Leaving You"
- Ratt "You Think You're Tough"
- Rough Cutt "Take Her"
- Bon Jovi "Let It Rock"
- W.A.S.P. "Ballcrusher"
- T.N.T. "As Far as the Eye Can See"
- Motley Crue "Red Hot"
- Dokken "Paris is Burning"
- Iron Maiden "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

This is just a glimpse of the music. Tons more but this is a little snapshot, lol.

I'll say this too. Sirius radio, commercials, etc always play the "hits" from those 80s bands and is always the same ones. Some of my favorite songs from some of those albums were never the hits. If you get a chance some time, listen to Kix "Dirty Boys", Poison "Love on the Rocks", Motley Crue "Danger", and on and on. I think it was good that these bands had 8 or so songs on the albums.

One whole album that is amazing start to finish is L.A. Guns "Cocked and Loaded. So good!

I am just starting to check out LA Guns...and digging it. Nasty, greasy stuff with lots of attitude.

I’ll play…

Atomic playboys - Atomic playboys. (You’re welcome)

Bulletboys bulletboys. The whole album (Piggybacking off our other convo, that’s a Jose modded Marshall. Tell me f#9 doesn’t snarl different than that clip)

Vince Neil - you’re invited but your friend can’t come

David Lee Roth - Yankee rose

Savatage - hall of the mountain king / Sirens (RIP Criss, you’re criminally forgotten at times)

danger danger - beat the bullet

There’s a few to give a listen…
