i shot this last night in teaneck
pardon my long winded post but this was an exceptional reminder of less being more....
a few observations
JAKE FUCKING KICKS ASS esp at age 61
dude was drinking and smoking like an 18 year old and he just does not give a fuck!
his tone as you can hear was amazing
he was spot on ripping and having a BLAST!
as i was watching him i was thinking :
1.Some people are just naturals in their chosen field
Jake is a prime example of this.
2.No Wang bar No two hand tapping no gear whoring or obsessing over amps and endorsers- he knows what works [charvel/basic marshall/freidman amps and a small but effective pedal board]and he has stuck with it.
3.jake is a killer song writer and rhythm player whose chords and rhythm style are quirky and weird.
His FEEL and soul is leagues beyond his peers. He just has a lot of soul and funk in his right hand.
As much as I respect warren Dimartini, Lynch , Vai and all the other great southern cali players, Jake's legacy as far as writing classic non poser hard rock that will stand the test of time. [ i have to give it up to lynch and his voluminous output the last ten years so no dis there]
This is of course my opinion but i can't hang with dokken or ratt etc all except for the guitar solos.
Jake has never released ANY compromised material except maybe with ozzy.
4.Not sure why everyone hates Darren james Smith ? he was a great frontman and sang his ass off including Ray's material.
5.The bass player and drummer were tight and the entire band was having a blast,
If you get the chance do not miss these guys!

Cool post and thanks for clips. I think two reasons people don't like Darren James is he's not Ray Gillen , I think a lot of people thought when Jake came back on the scene in 2014 he would possibly have a singer similar to Ray and pick up where Badlands left off . The first RDC gig in 2014 Darren was pretty out of it supposedly due the nerves and he drank a bit to calm himself who knows but I think a lot of people saw those clips and decided to not give him another chance . Just my take

yep nailed it

If people had heard the stuff he was doing with Mandy Lion they might have got where jake was heading after badlands ... songs like Wasted, Slave and War Machine on the first album were pretty much in that same vain and the vocals match that vibe which shows Darren (and Paul D) was the right choice from Day 1
