It's painfully obvious they're a studio band. Mind you they're playing MOP so much faster they can't keep up with the down picking and those harmony solos are total wet ass. Shit...I can't keep up with the downpicking when I jam to it at regular speed. I will say that the tone they get on the '89 Seattle video from the Live Binge and Purge box set is pretty much awesome, as well as the performance.

Kirk is just not an improviser. Give him time to craft something and I think he's very good (80's records) but he can't play "rock" or even metal to save his life when it's made up on the spot.

James' voice is also shot on those video's but in playing devil's advocate think about the night too. They're really just hangin' and having a good time and playing is probably not that high a priority in their minds. Just enjoying the moment of the induction.

I don't get why everyone bags on Robert, other than he looks a little goofy. The guy is a monster player with huge tone(not evident on the DM album). I mean, he plays all their shit with his fingers and no pick for Christ's sake.

Agreed with that. Robert is a BADASS bass player. Actually is arguably better than everyone else in that band.

I must agree, Trujillo is wicked good, I love the Infectious Grooves albums...

Metallica, a studio band? They are anything but a studio band. They even say themselves that they live for the road and shows they play. Their live show is the single best concert and entertainment I've been to, and I've seen a lot of friggin concerts. Their energy and intensity is insane and addicting. Watching them on TV is nothing, they don't usually sound right and you get none of the actual energy/vibe from them. I've been to 15 concerts and counting since 1986 and not once have they disappointed with their live show except on the St. Anger tour where their guitar tone was really bad.

If you go to an actual live show, you will see and feel what I mean. Fans going nuts, people singing and screaming louder then you can imagine, vocals completely drowned out not because they were too low, but because the crowd is so loud. Their guitar tone was fine when I saw them in January,. It was balanced between the 2 of them and Rob and they sounded good. I don't know what the sound guys did at the Hall of Fame indoctrination, but that isn't what their live sound is like. They truly are a live band, and in fact you are the first person I have ever seen that called them a studio band. They hate the studio, they want to be out playing shows, it's where they shine.

Where they don't shine are on TV appearances, they never have. For the most part, every time they have appeared on TV, their tone has been crappy and the show was just meh...it really misrepresents what a true Metallica concert is like, because it really is a unique and amazing experience.

Absolutely. I saw them at a small club in Philly back in '94...they were crushing and Trujillo was a monster!

Trujillo is one of the absolute best bass players out there. I noticed him first back in 1993 when Suicidal Tendencies opened for Metallica. When I saw ST play and noticed Rob doing that crab thing, I started paying attention to his bass lines and him in general. I was surprised to find just how talented the guy is, he is an absolute beast when it comes to playing.

He is also a really really nice guy. I met him in January (along with the rest of them) and he was extremely humble and just completely cool and chill. Very easy guy to talk to and seemed really interested in those of us there and what we had to say to him. We even joked around with him by saying he was a midget because Lars was taller then him, then we showed him the special Rolling Stone cover that had a pic of them on it and Lars was indeed taller then him, even though he really isn't. He laughed pretty hard and said he would have to go have a talk with Rolling Stone about that :)

Just a great guy overall, but mostly a hugely talented player.

For me there's a difference between getting caught up in the energy of being there and how the band actualy lays it down vs. the recording. I've seen them live a few times as well and, yeah it was fun but I trully believe that a great performing band (and I mean in terms of reproducing the music, not pure energy per se) in any medium can lay down their goods with maybe the occasional stumble. I haven't seem Metallica once sound or play well on TV, and they've been on TV a lot. Like I said I do think the Binge and Purge Seattle recording is pretty kick ass but it's rare to me. Just look at the "year and a half" vid of their studio time, especially putting the drums together. All just IMO.

Their best albums, RTL, MOP, AJFA, Black, were meticulously pieced together with overdubs & click tracks galore. Tons of production 'magic' too. The polar opposite of a live performances in the studio. The 1st three I mentioned are some of my favourite pieces of music ever, but they have NEVER sounded as good as the albums live.

+ 1. I've seen them enough times, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it they can't even play their own parts accurately some of the time. They even edit some of the more challenging (for them) passages out of the live versions. Lame

Who else has noticed how out of tune James and Kirk are (occasionally) when doing harmonies together ?

+1 And Kirk tend to bend out of tune alot during solos.
