Marshall nerds…I’m thinking of picking up this ‘79 2203 JMP. Obviously it’s had a loop installed but the owner says it’s stock other than tubes. Any reason I should pass?

All comes down to how much they're asking since permanent modification was done to install the loop - nothing wrong w/a job well done and especially if you want the loop, just makes it a bit less desirable to collectors willing to pay top dollar for all original units if you're concerned about resale at all (only exception would be if the mods were done by a highly prolific modder).

Looks like it has the original iron in it which is always a plus - I'd seriously consider it if the price was right and I had the extra cash laying around.

Amps way overdue for a recap. Someone changed out the bias supply caps with radial instead of axial which looks stupid. It has the desirable red WIMA caps of that era. Overall it doesn’t look bad and would be a solid purchase.

Depends on if you're buying it to play it, or buying it as some sort of investment

Everything looks pretty clean to my non-expert eye, but in general I just notice the weird radial caps which is an odd choice but nothing terrible

For an amp that's permanently modded like this, its best being used

It's not really an investment piece any longer

So keep that in mind as far as the asking price

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I’m looking at this to actually play hence I don’t mind the permanent loop mod. I have a captor x I can use as attenuator for now. The dude’s asking a little over $2k.

Not terrible since it has the original iron, I would try to get them down to 17 or 1800 unless you absolutely can't live without it

2k is the bottom range for a completely clean specimen AFAIK

Since it needs a full recap I’d talk him down to $1750. Maybe $1900 if the tubes aren’t garbage brands or shot. Most high dollar PTP prestine kit amps can be bought for $1600 for reference.

Just to throw it out there, I have a '79 JMP2203 that's been serviced, recapped & BAT modded- if you're looking for a fire breather rather than a potential maintenance job. PM me if you're interested.

Yep, agreed completely. It's not horrific pricewise because it's got the original iron, but it needs maintenance

and the loop modification, no matter how cleanly installed and functional it is, takes a good bit off the top range

Hopefully the seller is amenable to negotiation - otherwise buy GJGo's amp lol
