Johan Segeborn dissects Jake E Lee tone, EVM12L vs G1265's

I'd say it's pretty spot on........I know the EV's were important but I didn't think they would have that much effect, boy was I wrong.:dunno::rock:

I had a 4x12 of EVM12L's and I just could NOT drive them loud enough to sound like Johan's video.

Yes he did a good job on that one.
I often say that I think speakers (& cabs) usually are one of - if not THE - single most impactful component in the whole signal chain of an electric guitar rig; this is a good example. Major EQ effect on the "tone" coming out of the amp + everything else before that.
The last section A/B'ing the added effect of the post mic EQ is also showing how that is important to get THAT sound. And the speaker is just like a big final EQ stage in the rig.

I'm not sure I'd want to load a full 4x12 with EVs; way way heavy, and as you said they need to be pushed a minimum to sound best. Like most speakers IMHO, but given their power handling the EVs need more power than most to reach that threshold.
Johan "only" used 2 in the 4x12, and I've been wondering if that's not how most people, including Knopfler, Clapton, Moore, etc...did it too..

This is specifically why I have a big oversized 1x12 with an EV12L 16 ohm.

Its really difficult to push them hard enough to sound right with a full 4x12.

Agree; I have a nice 2x12 with some too.
I used several Boogie 1x12s with EV years ago before that, and I find 2x12 (or 2 speakers only in a bigger cab like a 4x12) is a nice "happy medium" option for most applications.

I realized exactly how loud Jake had to be after I loaded my 4x12 with them....................and happily went back to my 12H-30's........ And yeah... that cabinet was HEAVY, HEAVY as HELL.:loco: But I could proudly say I played a cabinet just like Jakes during his tenure in Ozzy and Badlands.

I would imagine a 2x12 with two 8 ohm EVM12L's wired at 16 ohms might be cool.

The only reason why I'd still like to try a fully EV loaded 4x12 is to do the live 80's Eric Johnson stereo clean thing, with partial open back.
Technically still two vertical 2x12s next to eachother, but pushing air in a bigger (shared) cab.

But then, just after posting that I think of the likelihood of having to move the thing, or worse move it up some stairs, and I go "mmnnnno, I'll stick to 2x12s" :D

I saw Jake on the first Red Dragon Cartel tour at a smaller venue. His stage volume was the loudest I have ever experienced. It was absolutely nuts.
I saw the Wicked Alliance tour at the Alrosa in Columbus. He had 6 full 5150 stacks and they were all cranked. Made it thru about 4-5 songs and left. He was louder than the PA!
