Legend has it that John Sykes once refused to give Norum VIP passes to a Lizzy show because "He stole too many of my licks"

:D :D

I prefer Sykes, but i love both and obviously Gary (I believe Norum stole most of his licks too lol).

But id say Norum's tone is closer to Gary's tone. It seems to me that Sykes uses (or used) more gain and his tone is more "scooped" if that makes any sense.

I remember the Sykes with Les Paul pic coming out first for a Gibson ad. When I saw that Norum album cover, I was definitely rolling my eyes. I really like Norum, but I swear the guy has gone through so many chameleon like changes to sound like whoever his favorite guitarist of the moment is. In my opinion, Norum should be standing on his own as a guitar inspiration, but he seems to be as much of a fan boy as any of us, yet he's way more fickle, and his doppelganging tendencies usually get documented on an album and you never know which Norum you are going to get.

What type of pickups was he rocking in his strats back in the day? Always use to see humbuckers in some of his strats. Always wondered what they might have been Super Distortions?

I prefer Norum with no humbuckers... :) His pickups of choice were Dimarzio FS-1 in bridge, HS-3 in neck. The solo on "Let me love you" is a prime example. :)

I'm a total Norum fanboy and he has more than enough chops to stand on his own but I think you might actually be correct here. In the early days he sounded like Malmsteen in parts, then some sykes, then Moore, then his Michael Shenker influences started creeping back in. You never know which one you are getting. Nowadays he is back to more bluesy Moore/shenker like playing and I kind of miss him ripping it up with the strats alla "let me love you" as mentioned above. Still one of my faves though. I actually think some of the best natural Norum is some of the live clips where he filled in for Lynch in Dokken. Some great interpretations of Lynch's solos.

Thats a really cool clip.

And imho "Another Destination" has some EVH moments, what do you think?

Anyway i really love his playing, he is one of my heroes.

And just how long have you been waiting to pull that word out of your hat? Show off.

'Half way home' is a total VH ripoff.. Sounds like 'Bullethead' which is an old VH tune that ended up on the latest VH record!

This thread make me really look forward to see John again with Europe in December... :)

I saw him with Dokken in 02' as well, I guess around the time of the Kiss of Death video posted earlier.

You forgot about his Zakk Wylde phase

So I guess that settles it... Norum is a chameleon but a pretty freakin awesome one!

I am huge Norum fan and love his playing no matter who he is imitating I guess. I hear the influences etc and do not worry about it. Nowadays I think its a mish mash of all of them to a degree. Doesn't matter to me - not a ton of guys out there playing like him anymore
