One quote from that thread

I had a 74 100 moded from him, it plain sucked. It was thin as a razor.
The two amps I had modded by him sounded killer. They were good amps to begin with and he added a bit of gain and sustain to the basic sound as well as some flexibility volume-wise with a push-pull that cut the volume for smaller places. The diode clipping master volume was a huge part of the sound. He was a nice old dude - always upbeat. Seemed to really enjoy what he was doing.

Steve

I don't understand why all these guys that have claimed to see this Jose mod and that Jose mod can't just do an exact mod like that rather than their own take? Now Todd Duane's sounds pretty damn good in his latest video, someone should look at that one and see what has been done to it. All these other Jose "inspired" mods are just hogwash and a marketing ploy. Ahoy Paloy!
I have detailed pictures of the Jose mod that was in my amps (not my exact amps though) - many of the modders do. Anyone could easily do it. They just choose to do what sounds good to them.

Steve

I will do a jose mod with out any changes not a big deal. Basically its a stock super lead with a extra gain stage added on the front end with the option to tie channels for a fuller sound and then it has a push pull master that switches in diode cliping master or a stock master. Jose told me that the diode clipping master was for lower vol playing and the reg master was for when you really cranked it. Makes sense.. Now if the amp in the stock form sounds like ass so will the mod. I always address this first in a mod. Sometimes you can only do so much without rebuilding the whole amp. So it is better to use a amp that has the right stuff to begin with or build a amp from scratch. Jose favorite amps where 68 to 72 supper leads 100's. Latter amps he did not like as well because of the lower plate voltages he had a fix for that though. Um there was not that many variations of the mods just sometimes things were left out at the request of players etc. Dave

old news. Jose did many mods and some of them plain sucked. I heard 2 back in the 80's that sounded like complete ass. The ones I heard sounded like the tone on the bullet boys album and I think that tone sounds like dogshit. The thing about Jose is that he didn't tweak the amps. If a good sounding Marshall was modded it would come back sounding killer but if the amp sounded bad to begin with, it came back sounding bad. Dave Friedman will more then likely tell you the same.

And you said yours sounded great, so what are you going to do in your amp, same thing or your take?
Mine will be absolutely identical to that mod, except foot switchable between the two masters Dave described above (instead of push/pull) and also foot switchable to a stock '69 Super Lead (Jose's mod could not do this, even with a switch on the amp). Mine will have a much better series/parallel efx loop that you can completely remove from the circuit (also by footswitch). Mine also will have a PPIMV that can be completely removed from the circuit (basically available for Super Lead mode). I won't have the option to tie the channels together that Dave describes either - I never used it...

Basically identical with foot switching added, stock Super Lead mode and a PPIMV that can be complete removed from the circuit. I'm basically trying to make a slightly more flexible version of the amps I loved that Jose did for me.

It's all in the schems I've posted here. Anyone who has seen the inside of a Jose can verify what I'm doing...

somebody needs to come up with a Jose mod for a Marshall DSL dammit ROFL! :hys:

Well... I just got off the phone with a builder who I respect very much who has given me belief that I'm headed in the right direction on the layout I showed him, so I'm feeling a lot more confident on the direction I'm going. Such a cool guy to take some time to help me when he's got plenty of his own stuff to take care of! I was second guessing my original layout, but I now feel good that it was the right path and will ditch the subsequent approach I was going down. This is really FUN though - it's like a crazy puzzle trying to fit all this stuff in without things getting noisy, etc...

These things take serious time though... and there will likely be a lot of tweaking once I get something to work with. Its quite a complex project with all the switching...

takes time???? dude it took me about 30 hours just to put together a basic plexi from a kit, I couldn't imagine trying to design, layout, chassis - holy cow man, that's a MAJOR undertaking - you gotta love it!

Here's a little snippet of what I'm working on. Not everything is even complete here and there will likely be some more shielded wire, but it gives you an idea... Switching adds a lot of complication...

Nik at Ceriatone?
Yes. His unbridled design genius in complex switching was a tremendous help!

In all seriousness, I'm not naming him because I don't want the guy to get inundated with help requests. He offered to look at my layout and I took him up on his generous offer. If he wants to identify himself, he will...

Steve, it's just been fun watching you get closer and closer to the finished product! If you indeed get to the point where you offer this amp as a kit then you will be hearing from me pronto.

Thanks man! I won't be selling kits though... I'm going to post the schematics, the layouts, detailed bill of materials and full instructions. You can buy the parts and build it yourself from everything I've provided. If you don't want to go through the trouble of actually building the amp, I'll offer complete amps in your choice of tolex, etc...

A bill of materials is great too. Either way I have been holding off any kind of jose-marshall amp purchase because I want to build this amp amp you are designing. Or maybe get you to build it... we'll see. Keep up the good work, I just know it's going to turn out to be great.
