I get lots of heads up stuff on YouTube from friends and subs and this Karnivool song came up,

I rahter enjoyed it, liked the guitar work and the vocals are pleasent enough.

Is this a good reference for them?

These guys are cool. Liked for a little while now. A lot of cool bands beneath the mainstream that produce some really cool music.

Been in my rotation for a couple of years now. I really like their last one. It's bit different from the CD you posted that song from but IMHO good. Great band!

yeah check their new one - sound awake
love that cd.

i think my favorite part is that it's intricate, it's deep, they are great musicians. but they do a FANTASTIC job of making it accessible....you could put just about any track from Sound Awake on your average rock radio station and it would do well.

If you get chance to see these guys live, don't miss out. Superb performance and awesome tones.

Yeah, that's pretty indicative of their style. Both of their disks are pretty damn awesome.

Thanks for the replies guys, guess I have more music to buy.

THE best live band on the planet at the moment IMO. Also, I second the suggestion to get their latest album "Sound Awake". It's a MASTERPIECE!

Here is an ENTIRE live show that has a good mixture of Sound Awake and their older stuff, Enjoy!

I absolutely love "Sound Awake"! I totally agree on it being a masterpiece. They came to my town, but I hadn't heard them yet so I didn't bother going  .

DOH! haha. At least you live in a place they would visit. They'd never make it to were I live. BUT, when they come back to North America I'm gonna make the pilgrimage to the nearest show I can!

Call me crazy but these guys remind me of Mudvayne, Not completely but they sound like a bunch of bands that Ive over the last few years... Not bad but Im not sure that Ill be giving them much listening time...

Ejecta turned me onto these guys. I fucking love them. I saw them live about a year ago and they were as good live as any of the 1000s of bands I've seen.

I like their first disc a lot, but the 2nd one rips ass. It's like some of the of the heavier/better Porcupine Tree.

That's one of their heaviest tunes. Kind of like Disturbed meets Tool (and Kage's Mudvayne).

This is my faves.

they are band from my hometown!!! all the way in perth western australia!!!
ive been following them since 99 and was there when they first played lifelike (which isnt the best indication of them now, as it was written towards the end of their nu-metal phase)

if you dig them check out defnitely check out their albums
"themata"

"sound awake"

weird drop tunings, the main one being BF#BGbe
their setups they use (from what ive seen and know from their home shows) are 5150 and marshalls and PRS/Gibsons but who knows whats on the albums

Ah so that vid was from their heavier days, have to admit I really dig it. Other than the bass player having chops I do not see the Mudvayne reference, the guitar player sits behind the main focus and uses a much large palette to fill the spectrum.

All I Know sounds cool, nice song.

you could prob say there is a tool/meshuggah(in some parts)/STP? influence.

if you like the vocals, the singer is in another band called "birds of tokyo"...more pop/rock/radio/mainstream.(he pretty much carries that band) which is very popular in aus

and theres a few similiar/vool influenced bands from aus too...like
dead letter circus
chaos divine <---more prog metal and also from perth
floating me(bass player from vool)
COG
the butterfly effect

I LOVE that band! So creative and deep and just great musicians. Ian is an amazing singer!

I had the chance to run stage monitors for them twice a few years ago and had to pass both times. Kicked myself after.

Cool fact: their guitarist Andrew wrote and played all the drum parts as well as most of the music on Themata.

I am absolutely in love with this band...I have had Sound Awake on heavy rotation for about a year now. I first got into them when I was on on a work trip in Hong Kong and China and basically spent three solid weeks listening to Sound Awake and haven`t really stopped since. The first three tracks on that disc are just simply amazing.

When my son was born the acoustic version of All I know was like magic for getting him to sleep...Something about bouncing him in caedance with the beat just worked for him :)

great band, their last album is especially good,

if you like that kinda vibe, check out katatonia, although a bit darker in nature their last 2 albums in particular are more atmospheric, but real heavy =0
