Joe Perry's tone was not only horrible, but his lead playing sounded like someone strangling a cat. I mean, I know playing in the same key the song is in is just a suggestion, but maybe at some point, you could at least visit the same key, just so we all know you are playing the same song as everybody else. I don't blame any of that on the incredible stack of amps behind him.
I have watched Idol all season because my kids were into it and this was their first visual introduction to Aerosmith and even they knew something was wrong.

I didn't watch it, 'cause I'm Canadian, eh. As such, I was focused on more important matters, such as the Stanley Cup Playoffs and reinforcing my igloo for the coming heat of the summer. 
However, based on all of the threads that have popped up here in the past 24 hours and, moreover, the posts in those threads, I think I made the right decision.
Pretty embarrassing that the "rockstar judge" gets up there at the end of the season with his "superstar band" and proceeds to blow turds all over the stage.

it was a bummer because i've always thought 'smith was a timeless band that delivered even though they are now pretty ancient. but last night changed my mind, and it was mostly perry's fault. those ascending bends in the first song were ultra harsh, wildly unmusical and not even anti-solo grunge/cobain enabled.
high def well lit close ups do not do that band any favors either. at least vh had the common sense to make it a requirement that there were no shots tighter than full head to toe on their tour for the giant video wall. roth is always thinking image.
but by all that is sacred this performance by jennifer holliday last night had me on my feet cheering!
just pure fearless hilarious angry black woman blasting attitude with every word. don't expect many people here to get it but i LOVED this more than anything i've seen on this show ever.

It wasn't his tone. His guitar was out of tune. No amp is going to fix that and he can't stop mid song and go, "Hey sorry...let me start that over for the guys on Rig Talk."

"IF" that were the case which i doubt, switch guitars, tune on the fly, compensate.

Perrys tone has always sounded like ass to me. Shame too as he is a unique player with his own thing going on.
