A couple cable capacitance numbers, pf/ft, I wrote down a bit ago. Might be handy.

Vovox sonorus - 22

Cardas Golden Chord - 23

van den Hul The Integration Hybrid - 26

Zaolla Silverline Artist Series - 28

Evidence Audio Lyric HG - 38

Mogami 2524 - 39

Belden 9778 - 45

The trick is either get a part time job at Guitar Center or make friends with someone who works there. 18ft Mogami gold with employee discounts are about $17 (down from about $55), platinums are like $30 (down from $120). 100ft XLR's are also about $30 (down from $100). Monsters are about $1 cheaper. Haven't paid full price for a high end cable even once and no plans to.

cool.... here is a couple more:

gepco X band 21 pf/ft

Klotz Lagrange 21 pf/ft

Elixir 10 pf/ft

I've been using carver zero pointe cable for many years at 16 pf/ft... my favorite cable

Can you explain these numbers for a dummy like me? What are we looking for, the lowest capacitance?

Regarless of capacitance... I think the Melody cable is clearer and has more highs than even the other $140 Evidence cables. Anyway, for a boutiqe amp and handbuilt guitar... WHY NOT get a quality cable. This is a first for me to spend $80 on a cable.. got my Mogami Golds for $30 for 18' and never pay full price either. But I can return the sucker if it doesn't sound any better than my cheaper cables and I will.

It's funny how most the VERY expensive cables have higher capacitance in many cables.

Alessandro Series Three: $229 42pf/ft
Lava vdH Interation Hybrid: $224 47pf/ft
Pete Cornish Silver Sig: $100 54pf/ft

and then the Evidence Audio Melody: $80 39pf/ft
Came in at #5 best cable out of 49 good cables in the Guitar PLayer's Pedalboard and Cable Roundup.

It's ALL personal preference. But I worked for WGS Speakers for awhile, and they didn't hire me cause I have bad ears, I helped voice the speakers. I'll know when it comes in if it was worth it and if not, I'll return and get one Mogami Gold cause I like them cables, just a tad warm... but with money left over I might could afford a T-shirt (JK).

The ONLY thing that matters in cable is capacitance. The spendy cable rarely has as good as you would hope.

Ever since I came across these guys (link below), I've been using them whenever I can. Good prices, awesome cables, and can do any custom work you really want.

They're local to me and have shopped there in the past. They're a great company to deal with.

I normally buy Mogami cable and Neutrik ends and make the cables for half the price.

100% Agree

The info I have on the van Den Hul Intregration Hybrid is it's Quad alloy (sliver/copper/zinc) design 26 pF/ft.

I have one of these and it is pretty killer it's just stiff as hell.

It might have chagned since 2008. I'm going by the Guitar PLayer 2008 49 cable Roundup.

For me, either make your own with quality parts for the "best", or just find a good quality for lower dollars.
What is "good quality" you ask?
Well, as you can see there's a different answer from different players.
For me it's a quality connector on both ends and cable that is flexible to move around yet sturdy enough to take a bit of abuse.
That can be had for under $30.
If you've got a rig and/or environment that gives you noise or hum or whatever, then seek a cable with better shielding.
The extra money spent could be worth it in that scenario.

I get more tone changes, that I can clearly hear, from different strings than from different cables.
Strings are lower cost and they have to be changed anyway.
I agree that it's the sum of the parts that matters, and good individual parts make the sum whole.
I just can't pay more than $30 for a cable.
The greatest new thing for me regarding cables is finding a very nice Peavey cable that has an on/off switch on one connector end.
I LOVE that. Now I can swap between guitars and leave the amp volume alone, just plug in and play, no nasty noises with a great on/off connector on your guitar cable. :)

Cables I've owned at the same time and compared back to back:

Pete Cornish Silver Sig
Evidence Audio Lyric HG2
Mogami 2425
Klotz Joe Bonamassa sig
Planet Waves

I sold the Pete Cornish and Evidence Audio cables as I by far preferred the Mogami cables. I kept the Klotz for practise but they're not the same as Mogami by a stretch.

Take from that what you will.

I just made myself two new 15 ft. cables last week. Got an old Belden 500 ft. spool from the 80's that still has about 300 ft. left on it. Re-used the old 1/4" ends from the two cables I pitched. At $0.09/ft., I burned up $1.35 for each cable. Works for me.

I`m currently using Klotz Titanium and there is definitely an improvement in sound comparing to Planet Waves Custom series I used before.

Thanks for link. These guys look pretty good, just emailed them for a quote.

Cool thread BTW

Remember that the most expensive part of the cable is the copper (or silver etc) so if you are comparing cost you have to know if you are buying a coax cable or twinax cable. The twinax cable is giving you twice the amount of copper and is more expensive for that reason. something to consider...

It's funny. These cable topics always end up the same: dozens of users with different brands/models.

Jeff Beck uses shit gear (specifically amp [Marshall DSL] and cables [Rapco]) and still manage top 1% tones.

FWIW: I've had a Mogami 2524 18 foot cable for several years and no problems.

PCP in DC...
