I play the EB skinny top heavy bottom and swap out the 52 for a 56, tuned to standard. Could never go back!

Just switched myself recently. Playing .013>.056 and like it a lot. My only gripe is having to set the action quite a bit higher and losing some playability.
Having Kiesel set up my new build with .012>.054. See how those go.

Nice and heavy. I usually play 11-54 or something like that on my 25.5" scale guitars. What scale length do you have it on?

I 'm running 13-56 on a 25" Pinch harmonics a a bit tougher on that 56.
Gonna try 12-54 on a 25.5"

These strings are Meaty, they Rawk.
I have used GHS for 30 years, and the Nickel Rockers CL 9.5 to .048 for 11 years.
I had to adjust the Floyd springs on my Charvel but other than that everything is Amazing.
Even my GF said she could notice a dif when i play.
I see why Angus/AC/DC & SRV used heavy ...
Certain string bends @A-440 can be tough but my callluses & finger strength will increase.
The Charvel & 2 Pauls are E-flat. Originally i bought the heavys just for that but there was such a difference i went whole Hog.

Gotch ya. I wouldn't mind trying a 60, but my action is already WAY higher than I'd prefer.
Feel and tone wise for drop C on this guitar, the 56 seems pretty good.
I looked at the tension guide when deciding what set to have Kiesel put on my current build and the 12-54s look like they should be relatively balanced across the set. I'm just hoping the action is still relatively low.

Just picked up a D'Addario Balanced Tension set but have not installed them. Looks like the B increases from .013 to .0135 and the
D and A both decrease by .001. Anybody love/hate the BT sets?

So you guys are slapping these heavy gauge strings on your axes and you dont feel the need to adjust your truss rod/necks????????? That wouldn't work on any guitar I own. The increase in tension surely increases the necks relief which is going to make your action higher. I mean, if thats what you like, more power to you, but I've never been a fan of too much relief in my necks......just makes it harder to play, which is not most peoples goal.

I absolutely adjusted the truss rod to proper relief but then from there I also had to adjust the action via the bridge. On the particular axe I'm trying the 12-56s on its a Floyd so there's no individual saddle height adjustment as you probably know. Like I said, I do not enjoy the extreme action height I wound up with; it does make playing rather trying.

^^^^^ Ok, that makes sense. I was just surprised nobody had mentioned adjusting the neck. About the topic in general, I've always liked the feel of heavier strings, especially when playing in a live situation where you might have a tendency to play more heavy handed than you normally would. My hands as i've gotten older just cant handle the tension like I once did. I gave in and am back to playing 9's now.

I hear ya man. I worked outside in subzero temps with my hands for 13 years prior to quitting and returning to school, and my hands are shot. 10-52 tension was ideal for me in relation to my hand/finger strength, but the low string was a bit loose in Drop C and I was having tremolo picking death metal type stuff on the low string. The 13-56 is great int terms of tone and tension but my hands do tire quickly. I'm hoping the 12-54s will be a good compromise.

This year i had Professional fret-levels & setups on all my guitars [for the first time] and what a difference. If there is a need for a truss rod tweak i do it but its not a big deal. I am aware tho that the heavier gauge is more string tension on my Gibson headstocks and that one tip-over or drop will prolly spell disaster. Need to avoid that at all costs.gtrwun":1svsgx80 said:
