I would send it back ASAP. Sorry man. But fuck that guy for shipping it like this.
That's bullshit and everyone knows it.
You need to return that and have a new one ASAP.
Or. Just get you money back and let him fix the guitar himself.
Maybe a lesson needs to be learned here.
Those guys cheaped out of a good case for a 10k guitar...fuck them.

This. Get your money back and spend it with a builder who isn't an asshat.

I personally am tired of seeing/hearing about builders ganking people.

IMHO, we need a sticky thread around here to keep track of douchebag builders. Builders are A) straight screwing people out their hard-earned money. B) horrible at communicating. C) constantly run behind on build times etc. D) set and provide false expectations. E) ship high $ items in sub-par packaging.

The B)-E) being warning signs that A) is a good possibility. At least it would be contained all in one thread and easily found if people google/search on a builder's name.

Hold on.....

While I appreciate the "condolences", it is not my intent to throw the builder under the bus. Gil is without a doubt, the undisputed master luthier of '59 Replica's. The guitar itself is beautiful and the neck is to die for. I am sure it sounds and plays as good as it looks. I have talked to both parties and we will no doubt work something out amicably. As it stands now, it was my decision to send it off to someone I trust to make a repair worthy of this guitar. When it comes back, if I am not satisfied, it will be replaced. If it is something I want to keep, then there will be some restitution paid, as it clearly devalued my investment and there's the repair and shipping costs to recover which no doubt will be honored. Yes, I am extremely disappointed and gutted with the delivery of the guitar. The "lacking in packing" was a bad judgement call and all I can say he has been extremely lucky in the past with shipping. But, there's no hard feelings. Shit happens. We'll get it sorted out - just its gonna be another couple months before I can play the bitch. I know who all has new builds in play, and have advised them about considering sending their own case. Gil may be limited on what he can get due to location. Anyway, its all good.

Steve

Not to say this is your fault whatsoever Steve, but did you question builder's shipping method at all before it went out ? I would have acted preemptively and purchased a heavy duty flightcase beforehand :

That sucks. Such a beautiful and expensive instrument to be packed poorly and damaged.....

Sorry to hear about the shipping damage. I've got ATA flight cases (two) for my Les Pauls when I fly. One by Gator Cases, another by a builder I can't remember. Even then the box that goes around them for shipping (if not on a plane) is a good 4-5 inches all around.

Good luck with getting it fixed, but frankly I think a replacement guitar is in order. While the repair will be more solid than the natural wood (in most cases) there is still the matter of reduced vibration transfer of the stings, especially since it's broken right past the truss rod.

I wish you luck.

I'd go for at least one of these SKB hard plasic cases if not true ATA for something of that value...sucks Steve, really feel for you.

Hope you get it worked out but I agree with the others, a builder charging anywhere near the price we're talking about on this type of guitar should know better & not take chances with crap packaging. More so knowing how fragile the headstock is on a Les Paul too...

Made me nervous as hell when one of my Suhr's shipped in a gig bag & boxed (and Suhr gig bags are the nicest I've ever seen). Still I was very concerned until it was in my hands and I was only shipping a few states.

For $250 its cheap insurance, I'd buy one now for that guitar.(or any other of high value being shipped across the US or the world for certain.....)

This: SKB 3i-4214-56 (Les Paul) (Waterproof Guitar Case, Les Paul)

Funny thing is that I bought an LP Custom from Sam Ash in Florida, only a short trip to Atlanta. Snapped the neck...

I have bought two guitars from Steve, all the way from the land of the sand, not a mark. Packed well, road ready.

It was not bad Karma for damn sure.

Damn, Steve. Sorry. Hopefully it gets handled properly and fixed.

I can't imagine your disappointment. Sorry bud. It can't be undone, by I hope it gets sorted out in a way that provides you some relief.

Well Stevie... Seems as though you've got a good handle on this, you're looking at it from a healthy viewpoint, and you're going about it the right way. Granted, I'd still be on the "don't fix, just replace" bandwagon, but you've got your reasoning, and that's all that needs to be said.

Good luck with it.

Now, if at all possible, post up some more of that hot baboon porn you got floating around. It'd do a world of good for some of us, erm, members.
