Fuuny thing, I was waiting for the local Board of Ed meeting to start which was in a grammer school music room and I started to think about what Ed was saying about 80s licks and I have to say there is many uses for them if used in a different context. Let me explain,

I was looking at the walls and they had the staffs with major scales which I am sure is used for the kids with recorders and beginning band players and I had this brillent idea.........it would be very cool to have the kids hold each note and laying down some serious high gain violin scales over each note as they accend. Yeah probably tired to some and you could call it cheese BUT the kids would be very hip to that I think.

I wonder what the chance is that I could bring a MArshall 1/2 stack to school one day when my son has music :)
How is that 80s licks? Look it's simple, running up and down a scale in order to get the sound of it in your head...great, running up and down a scale as fast as you can is IMO a huge waste a musical space.

Not directed at you, but generally speaking...
Remind me, why is it that if I disagree with the going shreditude it's a pissing contest, but the other way round is an opinion?

No problem on my part, just always thinking music even though I should have been thinking budget at that moment :) I understand both views and will admit I dug Royster throwing down more than the kid with insane chops. Not knocking either one but for what I enjoy I liked Royster throwing down hard, maybe because his performance was in a band context.

I just enjoy listening and talking music hence my stupid high post count.

Ya, here it is:

what is your point? other than as usual...completely moot.

Hmmm.... You're making attempts at insults? I was just having fun with some of the (what comes across--to me)-- as pompous/sanctimonious statements, that you make. Get over yourself Ed.

My point, since you seem to really want to push it: You sometimes come across as though you believe you're better than you actually are, and this fairly recent video (certainly you weren't a 15 yo kid in this video), shows that pretty obviously-- that, that was more than just a bad performance day. It was chalked full of "Suck & Choke".

No worries...
Pot calling kettle black? Are you projecting?
Whatever you may perceive i think of my self has little to do in a discussion about what gives me hope when it comes to the future of music.
FWIW, "how good" some one is matters generally speaking little to me, if you really want to discuss this i care about 1 things...are you doing something, or are you talking about eventually doing something. How you do it...whatever.

insult? not at all, it just happens that your constant posting of the crap video in order to get a rise out of me and failing at it is as moot as the point you're trying to make.
I have no reason to insult you since you or your opinion matter little to me. And unlike you I don't need the on-line opinion validation.

Projecting??? I think you protest a LOT for someone who couldn't care less.

Ya, uh huh... Ed, you're the one who went on about the kids (in a less than positive light). THAT had nothing to do with me. That was ALL YOU, appearing to me-- to be exhibiting your sanctimonious and pompous personality.

As far as needing validation goes-- That is usually something that would be nice from someone who's skill and playing is something I aspire towards, and well... Don't feel bad (I'm sure you don't), I listened to all the stuff on your CD, and didn't buy it because it was not something I found to be inspirational, or particularly interesting. I mean sure, you had some stellar guys playing on it, but I figure in this economy-- even the guys you had on the cd will take paying gigs with relative nobody's like you, if the money's right.

Feel free to add me to your ignore list, if you need to. I'll try to just refrain from any more of this sort of interaction with you.

No worries... I figured you saying you were too lazy to look for the video Harry was referring to-- was the one I posted. That is when you decided to insult me 1st, as if I am somehow responsible for that sort of performance from you-- contrasted against you talking nonsense about some teenagers who's playing is better than what you did on that fairly recent video, imo.

Oh Ya: regarding constantly posting that horrible video of you-- just to get a rise out of you. WOW can you say drama queen? You must be referring to me posting that video-- the one and only time I ever did, in a post where you were saying how tone is in the hands and that you sound the same through whatever you play through. I posted the video questioning why you would sound like that intentionally.

I always dig checking out young players that have obviously put in some time to develop their skills. I hope they go on to do something really cool with it.

Nope not trying to be obtuse just saying the thread was about "kids" playing and you posted a clip of a 24 year old man. Yep what you just posted was very impressive for a 12 yr old kid.
At my age 24 IS a kid.

I`d played for 14 years when I was 24...i.e as long as the kid with the JEM has lived :D
Now I`ve played for 26, and still ain`t any better.

Ritchie Kotzen started out like the shredding kid in the video, I have his first instuctional video. He`s obviously got the chops already, so being able to start expanding TASTE at the age of 14-15 definitely gives me hope :) True, the world probably doesn`t need more shredders, but seeing kids that are willing to go the extra mile to become proficient on their instruments is always good, IMO.

:checkthisout:

instruments are a competition.

music however is free game.

thats my opinion. take your skills and apply them to something useful and you've got something going on

But that was an entirely different time. Back then Rock guys got the chops other guys already abused for years. My entire point is/was that there are guys out there, that give me hope that guitar doesn't go the way of the saxophone. Around here you got a bunch of us that were coming up during the 80s shred days, and while a stroll down memory is fun personally I'm rather happy that approach to playing went by the wayside. As I said, in the end I'm just an old fucker with an opinion. You know...walked to school barefoot in the snow up hills both ways...

Personally I think speed applied in the right context against the proper time sig is dynamic and amazing, no matter what where when, as long as it's tempered by feel you've prolly got a decent player. I imagine thats a basic statement for alot of guys here. But I although think everything has it's day, guitar included, cause all I really see is whats been done, it always comes around again in some hybrid form or another. But I think its already gone the way of the sax, Ed. Or the accordion before it..... but there'll always be another Parker or Hendrix or Van Halen or somebody to come along an screw with something in a different way an create some larger thing no ones quite thought of yet.
Thank god for Kids!! They get bored listening to whats already come and take it somewhere else. the Eternal March of Man.....

Agreed. I reckon my bitch is that around here the context is less of a consideration than the chops. Like I said there's a lot of us middle aged fuckers around here. And many that still listen to the same stuff they listened to 20 years ago, and while that's fine if that's what you're into. It's so not fo me.
As for the next Hendrix, my money is on some kid marrying guitar to a laptop/DJ'ing hang.

As for kids, well that's why I love finding out about guys like Tony Royster.

But hope for what?

It leaves me beyond cold aside the cute and novelty factor.

If I want hope I have to look at stuff like this...

It gives me hope in the respect that the Youth of today hasnt turned its back on the classics. Forget the fact that rock, hard rock, classic rock, etc of the 70's and 80's is near and dear to my heart, its got timeless appeal and has made a statement that transcends genres. Like it or not, its important, formative stuff IMO

The fact that youve moved passed it or dont care for it any more doesnt make it any less significant. In addition, who knows where these kids will end up in their musical journeys? Its not like youre doing anything today that has much in common with where you started.

For me, its cool to see young kids playing and digging stuff that came out LONG before they were even a twinkle in their parents eyes.. I suppose the genre doesnt really matter but you cant deny the impact of guitar driven rock and watching a kid pay respect to where it all kind of began and flourished is a nice thing to see, again, IMO

Bro, I dont wanna bust your bubble an be a tool an point out the obvious about myself, but chops over context IS the FKN BACKBONE around here!! How many other of us, (not you, Ed, you play,) if better equipped for music or life, wouldnt have those missing elements covered an have an album/tour out??!?? your talking to, me, for example, who ARE one of those 'almosts'....  This is NOT a site chock FULL of Pros, Ed....    got a site full of guys who for various reasons may play like all get out but may be missing some elements, many of them the feel we were talking about, cause often the athletics is easier than the feel...

I get what you're saying, however this so isn't about who coulda been a contender, you don't need to be a player to appreciate something. Or in my case not appreciate it. All I'm trying to say...it's fine and good that Kage finds hope in kids digging 70s and 80s stuff. For me hope comes in the form of kids like Royser just doing scary stuff that isn't the typical thing.

How so? Important formative stuff for what? Take a look how other instruments that are squarely rooted in those genres get taught. Take a look how South American kids get spoon fed rhythmic stuff...
I have no issue with you digging it, but by the same token you should be okay with me having a difference of opinion.

Oh, no doubt! but I wonder how many of them live up to a pedigree like that and actually dont crash an burn by adulthood and TAKE It someplace? I'm sure theres no pie chart on it yet, (or is there?) but theres ALWAYS been that immediate Burst that kids are capable of, that freaky talent that allows them the ability to hit it at a young age. I wondered to myself as a kid that I had fast hands and could sing pretty well but some guys just 'looked' and sounded like their hands 'belonged' on a guitar a while before I started to 'get it'. Some folks Never get it. We all develop differntly, but my hopes hang with someone willilng to do the research at a young age and look behind them and pull from as many sources as they can Right away as opposte to 'shooting stars'...
