Kohle Audio - ENGL amps shootout

They all sound pretty good to me. I think I also preferred the Marty Friedman Sig amp, with the Blackmore second.

I have the Marty Friedman Inferno signature ENGL. He's pretty spot on with his assessment of it. When designing, Marty wanted elements from several amps blended into one.

ENGL comparison aside, the Inferno sounded excellent going through Karnivores. That pretty much sealed me eventually getting them.

Do you know what those amps were that he wanted elements from? Surely not the Blue Voodoo 120??

Yeah, he said in an interview he wanted elements from the Morse, Invader, Powerball, and SE.

As far as the BV120, Marty never played that one, just endorsed it for whatever reason.
He did use the BV300 as a power amp for some of his rack preamps. The BV300 has the same power section as an Ampeg SVT; and a completely different preamp from the BV120. ST. Louis Music owned both Crate & Ampeg at the some so there was some crossover in designs.

Yeah the Marty Friedman sig sounded really good. If I could only have one amp and it had to be an ENGL, the Friedman would be a top contender.

I will say though, if I had several amps already and wanted to get an ENGL specifically to do the the big signature Euro Metal thing the company is known for, it would be a tossup between the Blackmore or the Fireball. There's a particular kind of compression and Presence those amps have that's pretty cool and unique.

However it would be tough for any ENGL to beat the OG Savage 120 though.

Never gave ENGL a chance.. I know they’re big overseas.. The low end & mids gave the fireball some thunder chugs. Preferred it in solo but once the drums kicked in that Ritchie Blackmore just sat right. Preferred it’s saturation.. They both have some rich “wizard like” harmonics. Made the special edition sound solid state & bland..

I agree. I have two ENGL Marty Friedman E766’s. Very smooth with a great noise gate/loop system. The clean channel is outstanding as well.

Very affordable.

I had a Powerball for a few hours. It arrived but was too nasally IMO. It was returned the same day.

I had a Fireball which was better but still not there for my ear. I sold it after a couple weeks.

I don’t care for the mic placement or perhaps it is the speaker or combination.

The Fireball sounded best to me out of those, but they still all have this congested thing in the mids I dont like that I hear in all ENGL clips. I dont think I would like their sound long term. Even my ENGL Powerball Synergy Module only gets so much use compared to others.

I wish he would have put an AE in there. It has a Savage lineage like the Blackmore and sounds brutal. Definitely would have given everything else a run for its money.

As mentioned I have the Inferno. I also have the Steve Morse signature which is pretty bad ass with the "mid matrix". An AE 100 would be the other ENGL I'd want to add to the group.

My friend has all the Engls all most . A room full . I’d say fire ball 100 was best out of all . And the savage 2 . And the special editions are great . But all the buttons on Engls barely do shit . So I fund all the extras buttons annoying and unusable . I have a Powerball. Once I set those buttons I never touched them again . Simple Engl is better Engl

Engls all sound good to various degrees.

I think the artist and blackmore are the best sounding for my purposes

100% this. It's cool to have all the channels, knobs and buttons if you need them. If the ENGL has the core tone you want and you like their signature compression you can accomplish a lot with simple BMTP.

Though i do wish my Inferno had a depth knob as well. Sometimes I want a little extra oomph that I can't quite get out of the bass knob before it gets flubby.
