KSR vs ENGL

What kind if issues? I don't gig, I don't take my gear out of my office. An amp will sit on my desk and and go direct into a Captor X+ to my AI. I don't even own a cab, so this thing will just chill on my desk, whichever route I go.

Same scenario here. I only used the Engl to play and record at home.
Problems were: Sound cutting out, which could have been caused by a number of things. Bad jacks, which were separate from the other sound issue.
I've encountered similar stuff with all types of amps. But not new amps. And not as consistently as they were on the Engls, all models, at GC.
I pulled the chassis on the Ironball to troubleshoot it. What I saw inside was enough to write Engl off for future purchases.

Man I loved these Blast from the Past albums when they came out in '00 I believe. But I always wondered why Kai Hansen re recorded all that Ralf Scheepers stuff. Maybe Primal Fear were bigger at the time and he felt scorned. Great sounding albums though. Krauts rarely miss there

I love both versions of Gamma Ray, and Primal Fear obviously kicks ass as well. I know its a love hate thing but I love Kai's voice so I was all about the Blast From The Past versions.

I totally get the engl savage and powerball for the more processed modern sounding thing, but for my tastes, the artist (along with the blackmore and a few others with similar topology) is the best sounding engl and it isn't particularly close

It's got a way sharper, more focused midrange with way more "kerrang" than any of their normal line of amps, and it completely out punches most other amps in its price range... which I suspect the build quality is the reason why lol

I've used it in all the last few recordings for my punk band and it's sounded great.



Fingers crossed, I haven't had any problems with mine. I've gigged and done a couple mini tours so far and have had zero issues. It's been rock solid.

Hey all, I had my mind completely set for some time on getting the KSR Orion as my first tube amp, but I'm on an Engl kick. Engl patches have always been a favorite of mine in my modelers. I love the Engl characteristics from the Fireball and Savage, that snarl, to me it sounds like it's in the highs or high mids.

My question is, I love what the Orion offers, but can it be dialed to have that Engl snarl? I'm itching to pick up an Ironball and am not sure if getting both would be worth it.

Does anyone have both the Orion and some Engl's (Fireball or Ironball, specifically)? Can they dial similarly?

go with ksr orion...they local if repair is ever needed, its a killer ..i hit it with a eqfh parametric in the loop and a a mini zull ...its quiet and crushes..im no expert but it does kill. i have dual rec rec 72x,i use the ksr at home i love it, call kyle he may evan may mod it to your taste.

You'll get more aggressive, Engl-like tones out of the KSR with the right boost. Something bright and clanky. Fortin 33, Fortin Grind, Airis Mid Screamer, or TC Integrated Pre.

I love the Savage. I'm a big fan on Necrophagist and Muenzner era Obscura, as well as Fountainhead and Muenzner's solo work and work with other bands. A lot of the death metal I "grew up" on was Engl.

KSR is only a few hours away from me, and I love supporting local, so I may get the Orion, but maybe down the line.

I appreciate everyone's input, especially about the quality issues. I can't work on an amp myself, so that's a big negative towards the Engl.

I’ve been wanting a KSR Orion after I saw some great clips of it. Still have an Engl preamp that should be easier to maintain after selling a Savage 120 and a Fireball 100.

The Artist was still may favorite, (had the 50 and 100). The Fireball was my second favorite, owning the 100 25 6L6 and now the KT77. I really wish they'd do an Artist 25. But, I'm still happy with the KT77 version of the 25.

That said, I ironically put KT77s in the 50 watt Artist I had. Still leaned more Marshall than the Fireball for sure. Love the Artist.

I had an Engl rack (E530 preamp and E850/100 power amp) for well over 10 years without any issues. I still have the power amp, sold the preamp. I've owned an Engl Artist Edition 100 E651 for a few years now without issues.

of course, they never leave my house so they don't get moved much.

The Artist Edition was my first non-Marshall modded Marshall, and one of my favorite amps...I'd be hard pressed to choose between it and my Bogner Helios Eclipse.

I’ve owned the KSR Artemis II for about 10 years, one of my favorite amps of all time.
I had a Firebal 60 many years ago and owned the Steve Morse model and Inferno.

As many have said they are different sounds. The KSR to me is closer to the SLO family, it has a softer rounded sound in a good way is the best way I can describe it. Of course you can dial in treble and presence to give it more sharp bite, but overall it’s smooth sounding.

The Engl’s I’ve owned have more of a finished, processed sound. They have that aggressive modern sound. I liked the Inferno best of the 3 I’ve had.

I’ve also never had issues with any of them, but I keep them in my studio. I think buy used so you can resale and not lose money and you can’t go wrong with either.
