speaking of vintage tones,
are there any cool fuzz and vibe pedals in the $150-200 price range worth checking out these days?
 
fuzzes are really weird yet fascinating to me. i like how others sound using them




but i can’t say i’ve ever found one that sounded and felt great under my fingers with my gtr and rig. had a big muff and hated it. maybe just a dunlop fuzz face?

You know, I´ve been thinking about trying out some fuzzes lately as well. Been using vintage-style strats more and haven´t found just the right thing to push the Marshalls with. I would probably think Fuzz face or some variation first, but who knows. Never really looked into them.

I think it could be the TS/Voodoo-1 and not a fuzz, in the first video.
In the BW era he was using only the Bradshaw Freddy Fuzz which is not exactly a fuzz, and a Tychobrahe Octavia.
Rackdoctor covered most of BW sound in this video:
 
I dug this period the most. The Raging Honlies. He used a similar setup as in the LA Sound Design vid posted.
I have another show that shows a Boss DS-1 in the pedal rack. I'll post that too.



 
Whether you like Richard Marx or not, his guitar work on his first two albums is legendary. These are two of my favorite Landau solos ever.

that’s the thing—i’ve just never played a fuzz or combo of pedals that equal those tones that just blew me away. but admittedly my knowledge and exposure to great fuzz boxes is limited.

I don’t think Landau is using fuzzes. I think he just stacks pedals, mostly that Voodoo 1, which can sound fuzzy if you turn the gain up.

i did get to try that one out and it’s cool, and so is the duellist, but didn’t offer me anything i don’t already have between my current collection of various overdrives and boosts. and i’m down for stacking.

honestly the last fuzz that kinda sounded interesting to me is the one in my H9 which is the last place i’d think to go looking for a fuzz!

but i think kingtone makes great stuff and maybe they might have a cool fuzz/octave
solution as suggested in the octaland?

The King Tone stuff is great. I had their Octaland quite a few years ago, was a very good octave unit.
I find using an octave unit to get fuzz tones not cool at all. But some of them have a switch to go from the octave to a straight up fuzz tone.

i know you’ve had everything and you are infinitely more experienced in fuzz/octave/vibe pedals than i will ever be.

cool saturated (EJ calls it “pixilated”) fuzz that has smoother sustain but can clean up is the main goal—not raspy stones satisfaction—but if there is an octaver in it that wouldn’t hurt my feelings!


the fuzz in the H9 is surprisingly decent sounding with tons of added octave/delay options but the core analog warmth and touch dynamics when rolling off it is a bit lacking

 
IMHO a good old Fuzz Face in front of an old pushed Marshall with a vintage style Strat is one of the very best & classic guitar tone combo ever; period, the end. :D

Original old FF are now crazy $$$, and they vary a LOT; I've had a few, never had 2 that sounded & felt the same, I mean not even close they were all over the place.
I'd start by trying the different recent big OG size Dunlop reissues, they made good stuff with different transistors & circuit versions.

They key IMHO with such setup is really in playing with & fine tuning the pedal controls, AND using the guitar controls; usually the magic is in the "in between" 7-9 positions on the guitar volume, and a cent of a degre variation on that pot can drastically change the drive amount & compression feel. Right hand dynamics is your best friend.. enjoy!

i’ve heard the legends of never being able to know if you are getting a good one or not, which is why i was never in a rush to get stuck with a lemon🤣
