From all these years of messing around with fuzzes, it comes down to the amp being crunchy to a certain degree, and then running the fuzz into it. Of course, anything set too high, it’s gonna sound like a mess.
This Dunlop clip I posted was just a happy accident. I happened to set it properly that day.

i’ll admit i’m not so sure what the actual difference between a fuzz box and a distortion pedal is supposed to sound like!

A good FF can "sound" very much like the most fantastic OD/distortion box when setup "right" in that "around 8 at guitar volume" zone; but the "feel" is where it shines as a unique thing, with the most touch sensitive dynamics ever.
In "that zone", pick lightly without touching anything and you can get the most crystal clear sparkling tuby clean tone, "cleaner" that with the pedal off; then dig in with the right hand and "voila" your most amazing fat singing OD sound, ala Hendix/Landau. And with anything in between available at your right hand will.
