From all these years of messing around with fuzzes, it comes down to the amp being crunchy to a certain degree, and then running the fuzz into it. Of course, anything set too high, it’s gonna sound like a mess.
This Dunlop clip I posted was just a happy accident. I happened to set it properly that day.

i’ll admit i’m not so sure what the actual difference between a fuzz box and a distortion pedal is supposed to sound like!

A good FF can "sound" very much like the most fantastic OD/distortion box when setup "right" in that "around 8 at guitar volume" zone; but the "feel" is where it shines as a unique thing, with the most touch sensitive dynamics ever.
In "that zone", pick lightly without touching anything and you can get the most crystal clear sparkling tuby clean tone, "cleaner" that with the pedal off; then dig in with the right hand and "voila" your most amazing fat singing OD sound, ala Hendix/Landau. And with anything in between available at your right hand will.

went into my friend’s shop today and spoke to the resident fuzz guy. after trying a few different mxr and dunlop ones, and testing the clean roll off then bright harsh to dark smooth sustain ranges, i liked the tone and features of this one best.

the runner up fuzz today was the swollen pickle which sounded nice and did the vol knob clean up a little better than cryptid but didn’t have as much sustaining fuzz saturation and smooth to spitty tearing apart tone range.

speaking of vintage tones,
are there any cool fuzz and vibe pedals in the $150-200 price range worth checking out these days?

Kingtone Mini Fuzz V2 has been getting rave reviews everywhere. I bought one and a Duellist V3 couple of months ago but playing time with these has been minimal.

He using a Morgan head recently, which seem an old model.
Unfortunately he lost most of his gear when his house burned some years ago; according to Suhr he saved only a couple of vintage strats.

that’s such a bummer. i’d heard his home was was affected by the palisades fires during my LA trip to the Tyler factory, when the eaton and palisades fires were still raging.
hope he had his dumble modded super reverb and slidewinder elsewhere.
