So a Fortin Mod, is going to make a classic Marshall sound even more classic?

A Fortin mod will make a Marshall sound good.
Here's the deal...when you need to mod a JMP to sound "good" it's likely either an inexperienced player/engineer or some one that wants a JMP to sound like a high gainer. Which completely makes the point of having a JMP moot.

I was being sarcastic. Well... partly.

does this apply to Cameron mods as well?
Reeeeeeeeeally?! This is what you're going with...let me go lift our hearts...

I kind of agree with Ed here.

It's like getting a nice Fender Vintage amp (non reissue) and modding it. It looses it's mojo

Ed, what do you think of the JTM 45?

45s are great amps. But their prices are through the roof. If you're not spending the bread as a collector and want the sound of them get a 6G6 circuit. As in a tube rectified blonde Bassman. Alternatively if you can live without the tube rectifier you can get a 6G6A or 6G6B. All of them will be under a grand. And of course if you're okay without the tube rectifier you can always go for a BF Bassman which you still can get for 400 bucks.

Rule 27 of Rigtalk Marshall fight club.....

Never speak of hacking up old Marshalls with Degenaro around

'Any' mod will just make it more versatile.
I've had modded 70's Marshalls and they were still able to get the stock Marshall tone.....and then some!

My buddy had his 60-something Marshall modded and it still sounds as good as stock, but now has more versatility.

alright thanks for the replies.

Oh, forgot to mention I'm looking for a vintage Marshall sound. As vintage as I can get
The mojo is in the 68-72 amps....had bunches of later ones and they were ok, but I don't have them anymore either (still have the 68 and 69's). Yeah they cost more, but you can find good prices on them when you look enough.

I guess that's the thing I don't get. If you need versatility, why buy an old Marshall head then hack it up? Aren't there amps available now, new, that can give you that? I guess I just like the tone of old stock Marshalls and hate seeing them get cut up for someone who wants a metal machine...when they could just buy something stock that gives them what they need. I also feel sometimes people want to believe they need that mod, like they are getting something special that nobody has. To each their own, I guess.

Another idea (weirdo-ish):

800s with a tube driven loop, guitar into a mild overdrive (using 1/2 ECC) and then into the return. Should be an awesome "early" sound. For more juice, rewire, put the pedal in front and rock

Ive always been intrigued by jcm 800s.... Especially the fja modded ones on his website but I never seem to pull the plug on buyin one

Yet the original poster asked for vintage Marshall sound, personally I think an unmodded JMP is as versatile as I ever needed.
tell you what best high gain amp is the 2203 of Dave Simpson, and it stil sounded stock on the other input...BUT...having the option of having that mod, that essentially to me is useless in an old Marshall or not, I go with or not. If I want more gain channel switching or what not I use something else...if I want a cranked non master JMP...well, that's what I use.

I thought the JVM rendered all previous Marshalls obsolete? :D ;)

I've owned 37 heads in the last 4 years....and none could duplicate a Marshall good enough for me.
Personally, i don't need a 'special' amp or mojo... i just want to be able to go from Def Leppard's High n Dry to Demartini/Lynch/Slash :)

oh...and I'm not looking to start a war here.....

And what did I answer in the 1st reply in this thread:
"2) Plexi/JTM45"

I'm surprised nobody recommended a Metro/Ceriatone/TAD kit yet
