I'm surprised nobody recommended a Metro/Ceriatone/TAD kit yet
You know I tell you what if I were to spent money on any clone it be Metro.

Ed...we agree on something :D

Never tried the Ceriatone irons, just their chassis, which are awesome.

Well, hands down, the most versatile is the JVM. It will cover a lot of ground, has great cleans. For pure rock and roll tones, I kinda lean towards JMP's, or JCM 800's, For vintage cleans, hmmmm...... I never got them for that, but I kinda like the DSL pulled back a little, If there can only be one, and you need good chimey cleans, and a hi-gain lead channel, I would lean towards a JVM 210, if you want a 2 channel, if you need an array of good in-between tones, get the 410. I have a 410, and I have been pretty surprised after spending some time with it, at first, I was not really that impressed, But after tweaking it for awhile, I keep coming back to it, and I have quite a few piled up in there. Is it the best sounding marshall ever? No, But its very good, although a little compressed under heavy gain, and it has a TON of gain. I was assuming we were talking about buying new?

I recently finished a 69 clone from Metro and it sounds so good I'm pleasantly suprised. It's warm when I want it, it's mean and nasty when I want it. It turned out great and if I want more saturation I'll use a pedal. There's so many geat choices in pedals that I wouldn't do any gain mods on something like this. Post PI Master, loop etc I can see as legitimate functional needs but these circuits are so on the money for rock that if it doesn't do what you need gain wise plus a simple pedal, you need another amp.

IMHO You'll never get an amp that will give you many distinct, authentic classic flavors in one box. It's why many studios will have a good, old marshall (60's to early 70's) and a Fender. The type of Fender depending on what overdrive they want out of it because they all pretty much have a great clean.

I wouldn't be surprised though to see studios with AXE FX units or similar modellers.

Almost every major studio, and even home-mid size studio has a POD XT PRO.

Only because they haven't bought an Axe FX yet. :D

I thought the JVM rendered all previous Marshalls obsolete? :D ;)

That's weird....I heard the same thing about the MK V replacing every other Mesa
