I put a pair of P50's in a Buzzbomb 2X12 cab that i use with my SigX. I'm happy with them, they sound better than other speakers I have tried in there (grennmachines, eminence tonker& swamp thang combo) They seem to match really well with the SigX.

I know they were specifically designed for their amps, But look how many amps they have.

Hard to think they would all match up equally.

eg. cl100 vs UL
D60 vs Sig x

ect

Hey guys, I am sorry but I wanted to ressurect this old thread to post my experience.

I have had my P50's for a good amount of time now. Messed with every setting on mt Pitbull 100w amp imaginable too.

I must say I was pretty disappointed. They are not bad speakers by any means but definitely not what VHT/Fryette reps cracked them up to be.

My first comparison was rocking the setup, Pitbull amp Dcab with the P50's...then immediately changing to a RL Uberkab. No contest, Uber destroyed. Was a liiiiittle to bright/harsh for my taste but still sounded way better than the D cab with P50's.

My next test was to throw in V30 x 75 in my D cab. Still blew away the P50's. By far imo......

The end result is not so bad. The P50's are a Great addition to the V30 x 75 to make a full stack  ....Actually sounds amazing. But hands down when we play small clubs and Im using only a half stack I will not be using the P50E's

I still stand by VHT/Fryette cab quality. Very tight, focused..Sounds great...But I like it better with V30 x 75.

Good to know. So you've gone with the UberKab layout of V30 and G75 in an X eh? Coolio.

I still like my P50Es...

Glad you're rocking with a full stack now

I used P50Es in my FB cabs for about 6 months before I yanked them. I really liked them for a while but then after a few months I started hearing this "hollowness" in the mids that was driving me nuts. I just thought they lacked character. They were super tight though and had great low end but I also think that is the FB cab. I took them out and put in all V30s and amp very happy. The hollow mids are gone and the cabs sound killer.

+1

Where my favorite speakers in the beginning but after playing my Mills for a couple years and then trying the FB again, i couldn`t stand them. Lacked character like you mentioned.

I now use it as my right effected cab,W/D/W setup.

So far, the VHT Fatbottom has been the only cabinet I've liked enough to buy twice, after selling the first one. Crank a 5150 series amp through it and it'll make the hairs on your neck stand up! The speakers seem to get woofy when messing around on 8-strings though, so I replaced the speakers in the last one I owned. I regret selling that cabinet more than any piece of gear in my life, honestly. I grabbed another recently but will probably replace the speakers again. I dig the P50Es for most uses, but I tune low and need things to be as tight as possible. I definitely understand the 'lack of sizzle' comment though, because that seems to be true with most Eminence speakers I've owned so far, at least when compared to standard ol' Vintage 30s.

I couldn't sell my P50 loaded fat bottom cab fast enough.

So I am currently driving to sell this guy my D412. I bought it unloaded and when I got the. P50's I wasn't really digginit vs the V30x75 Pattern so they have always been in my backup cab.
Last night I threw them back in the D412 to get ready to sell.

Im almost speechless. It sounded really damn good. I still think running both cabs took the cake but im starting to realize the p50 take a little getting used to, but now I can see why they were designed for the Fryette cabs.

I take back any negative and apologize for ever disagreeing with Steve Fryette

I love my D60/D412 rig. They're a perfect match for my ears.
Agreed, that amp/cab combo was made for each other.

Well i used to hate p50, liked them in an extension cab. But then i put them back in their proper cab and it was a good change. Very well balanced is the only way to describe.

And no I actually sold the cab today. Already miss it but i had to. Might get another after tax returns or might do some realigning. Not for sure yet, but am Interested in a D60/120 or one of the new Randall's coming out.

I very much like my D120 & also am looking forward to see the new Randall stuff. Funny .... My favorite cab is a Peavey 4x12 Loaded with V30 & greenbacks...

What Peavey cab??

I was actually surprised that mine sounds decent with V30x75.

Never tried a quad of gb. The low wattage always scared me.

This is only a matter of taste / but know others that feel the same as I. The Peavey cabs built in the 80's ... they came stock with Celestion K85. This is my favorite cab with any of my amps. They are the same size as vintage Marshall cabs. I like them better than any other cab I have tried. I have owned several vintage Marshall cabs (still have one) & tried many modern cabs. My Marshall cab is loaded with V30 & H30. These Peavey cabs can be found very cheap.

Most guitar speakers can easily handle twice what they are rated. They just live a shorter life. Personally I usually use twice the power rating ~ 50 watt amp - 100 watts speakers or more. Because the D120 is such a powerful amp & the way Fryette rates amps (low in comparison with most company's) I usually use the full stack or THD Hot Plate or the MASTER low. David Torn uses a pair (2) Celestion Alnico Blue 15W 12" (cab is rated 30 watts) with a D120 & Hot Plate.

I would assume these are already the 412M or 412MS. The early models came with k85's in the early nineties they were coming with the Peavey sheffield 1290. AFAIR early models were all ply birch, newer models had a mdf back.

I would never hestitate pulling the trigger on one of those g12k85 loaded peavey cabs. unfortunately they are really rare abroad

I have the ms412 know nothing at all about it. Got it very cheap on cl.

Its front loaded tho

I have owned several ... none were front load. All birch like stated. Not sure model number ... but 4x12M or MS sounds right.

I had one of those early peavey cabs for years, it was my first 412 bought in Jr high school. I sold it for a couple hundred bucks a few years back, I had no idea what I had. I do remember, I replaced it with a recto 412 and thought it sounded a lot better than that old 412ms Peavey cab. I always thought those K85's that were in it sounded too dark.

The K85 are now called K100. Same exact speaker according to Celestion. I have a pair in a 2x12. They actually have a pretty flat frequency response .... a lot of guitar speakers have a midrange hump. The Mesa cab has a more modern voice.
