I guess you are correct, now there is just the auto tune scene and those of us who still like rock guitar has to live with what little bread crumbs we are thrown.
As far as only hearing of Doug recently I believe the Aldrich mod has been around a long time because well so has he. At least I have known of him for much longer than 4-5 years. Maybe he has not doing anything before then.....
