Magnatone Amps

They look cool, but to me they do not sound that great. Not my thing I guess. At my age now, I do not chase amps much and the tones I want are all from the basic amps like a plexi or a Deluxe type of thing. I also dig simple amps now moreso vs complicated stuff. Color me OLD.

I saw GnR open for Aerosmith when Appetite was starting to blow up. Loved his playing then and love it now. No issues with anyone who doesn't though. You do you.
I like Slash, but GnR never wrote another decent song after Geffen forced Tracii Guns out of the band.

Magnatone amps aren't complicated. Most of them are only 1 channel with minimal knobs to turn. My M80 doesn't even have reverb.

Didn't realize that was a Geffen move. How'd that go down and for what reason?

Have you seen the Live From Daryl's House with Billy Gibbons? It doesn't sound great, it sounds fucking perfect. Greasy, mean, purs, growls, and snarls just right when it should.

If you haven't, then look it up.

I owned a Panoramic Stereo head, and man it sounded spectacular. Especially panned out wide with two open back 1x15 cabs. It won't do Plexi or Deluxe, but what it does is something neither of them can come close to either. It's got a early '60s NMV small bottle British vibe, but with a reverb as good as any Fender BF, and the Tremolo and Vibrato in stereo are something nothing else out there comes close to.

I can get saying they aren't your thing. While not a Plexi or Deluxe, I do own a Hiwatt DR103, and an Ampeg VT22 for my bigger Brit and American flavors, and had both along with the Magnatone. The Magnatone broke up way earlier, got a really gnarly vintage amp about to explode vibe when cranked. I ran it usually a good bit past breakup, but not into meltdown. Rolled back for gorgeous el84 cleans. With a P90 or Dynasonic loaded hollowbody with a Bigsby it freaking ruled.

I think I have seen part of it. Cannot recall now. I am sure they are good sounding amps in their way. Sounds like a take on a vintage sound but a little different.

I'm not thinking it was. Guns exited like a year before they signed.

He also has zero writing credits on Appetite.

I think Pearl Jam is the only band that makes me turn off a radio faster the GnR.

I remember a lot of people interested in Magnatone and then a lot of political bickering came out. I can't remember if Magnatone was left or right. Because that doesn't matter at all to me. But it caused a lot of people to boycott Magnatone. It was years ago and history.

I think the amps sound great. I rarely see them anywhere.

At the 3k+ price point they want for a amp that has gigging wattage levels that leaves a lot of options to choose from.

I tell everyone to buy a THD Univalve. They cost $500 used. Better build quality and sound than most amps.

It's true class A so all the odd and even harmonics in phase. So the voice is not going to work for everyone. But it is usually my choice for vintage voiced amps at any price.

Even with a KT88 or 6550 pretty limited gigging capability there.

I'd say the Magnatone Slash sounds OK, but not OK enough to get me to spend money on one. That Caswell hot mod jobber one thread over did a better Slash. Then again I'm not really into the 1-channel Marshall thing overall.

I use a 6V6 with the Univalve into a 4x12 live and the attenuator is at about 10 o'clock.

We play louder than most bands. Even when I used a 1x12 people complained about it being too loud at a outdoor gig. If you can't get loud enough with a 6550 in a Univalve I'm not sure what your doing. Definitely not my experience in 24 years of gigs with it.

It says it's 15 watts. I have a '61 Maestro that is 15-16 watts 6v6 and not really loud enough to gig unless I have a soundman I can trust which boils down to 2 guys in my area of operations.

Agreed - less than 50w means you're at the mercy of the toothless alcoholic "soundman" who likes working at your local bar because it's, well, a bar.

That doesn't necessarily mean all 50w+ is in use (it won't be), but the additional headroom to get a good clean sound is.

A useful rule of thumb is that if you want a 100dbSPL volume at 30ft from the amps, the amps need to be about 50-100w with V30s. Most rock shows are between 100 and 120 dBSLP. Now, you don't have to necessarily do all that work yourself if the PA is suitable, but many PAs (and their operators) are not suitable.

A 15w amp with V30s in the same geometry will be about 90dBSLP which is about the level of a loud orchestra concert, not a rock show.
