Marshall JCM 900 SLX

A lot of the more recent Marshall stuff suffers from what I call the "Godfather 3" effect; it's still very good on its own, just don't compare it to the earlier, legendary stuff

The JCM 900 SLX its pure tube signal path,I already asked a tech about that.No diode clipping.

Your tech is wrong. There are two IC's after the tone stack for the fx loop which can not be switched out of the signal path. So yes there is sand in the path. Though correctly stated there is no diode clipping.

I've got a Guiterrez modded SLX I'm looking to sell. I'ts a metal machine! I believe there's been clips posted here before somewhere...
But like the other guys say, it's gotta be cranked to sound best.

Yes right, no gain generation. The DR and MII both have added gain though from clipping diodes.
The SLX is generally the most revered of the 900's. I never see them for sale, only the two other models.

I owned one briefly. Mine was buzzy and fake sounding, and at higher volume, it sounded buzzy and fake with a bit more power tube punch. 5881's didn't do it any good either.

Any DSL50/100 will put the SL-X to shame.
Any JCM800 will put them all to shame!

That's just your opinion. In the late 70s I thought that Marshall Plexi,s were boat anchors until you have a mod done to them(more gain). You can purchase a Plexi back then for $200-$300.Amp collectors hyped them alot now the prices are crazy. You can keep a stock Plexi.

Just to clarify my comments- the Dual Reverb has the clipping right after V1. Horrid. Just pull that shit out. Thats what set all the hate on the JCM900 range.

Nothing wrong with the SLX.

Buy the shit already and

You were soliciting opinion on the amp.....correct? Or do you just want opinions that justify your wanting to purchase the amp? This is an easy fix....just buy one, they are cheap enough right? Its not like a major investment for most guys and if you dont like it, just move it along. Ive owned and heard enough JCM 900's to know that they arent as good as the Deliverance you had or have. I played a 900 live for years and I thought it sounded good, but there werent nearly so many options as there are now.

Options you mean different brands of amps today.I like single channel amps.Sold my deliverance last year.I need to try a SLX,it's single channel that's a start.

I like single channel amps too. I have three, a Laney GH50L, JCM 800 2203KK and Soldano Avenger.

You know nitro.... I like single channel amps too. One great one I had that you might like is the Soldano hot rod 50 or 100. And it's a bright amp that really cuts. I loved that amp for live . It always cut thru the mix but not in a harsh way. Cleans up great with the volume knob too. Never needed a clean channel. A lot like the VHT actually, just not as dry. I think you'd dig it.

Another thing is that the earlier slx have el34's and later on used 5881's. if it has 5881's it will say so on front panel.

Yeah, I remember those horrible days in the mid 90's when all Marshalls had that "5881 equipped" sticker on the front pannels - like it was a GOOD feature!

The coolest feature on the slx and mkIII 900's was the dual footswitchable master volumes which are now a must have for gigging for me.

I had a SLX that I had set up for KT77's. I loved that amp, it sounded great.

Played one today at GC thought it sounded great. That was at low volumes. Any 80's sound I wanted was right there.
