seriously, is there an acoustical / logical reason to bore holes (or "ports" in this persons mind) in the back of a cabinet like this? am i missing something here?

DIY open back? Doubt is sound better, i tried myself different back panels.

Ports are usually in the baffle. I have not a clue

There is a tonal reason to port the back panel. Friedman's 2x12 has a small one for "bass enhancement." Mesa did it with the 3/4 back cabs too. Seems pointless on a 4x12 though.
