Marshall vs. Bogner cabs

Around '62 Jim Marshall was using 2x12s and kept blowing them up he says. He wanted to use 4 speakers in the smallest enclosure he could. There you have it 4x12 cab born. Not much brillance to it at all. The slant cab was born because he didn't like the look of the stack with two straights. Cut a slash in it, there you have it. What's funny is spending a shit ton of money getting that retro construction when it was all seemingly just based on looks.

I like the look of straight cabs much more than slant. The Bogners are nice in that the slant cabs still have the straight outer baffle thingy.

Polyfill is just preference, one is not better than the other. By using polyfill in a cab, it will artificially make the box act larger than it is, which will improve the deep bass response.

Try both and go with what you want.

I bought a book on speaker design back in the day - stuffing is added to increase the perceived volume (volume meaning size) of an enclosure. Done correctly it can increase volume up to 20%. Was mainly used for matching subwoofers to boxes.

It was a happy accident. I bought a cheap Crate 4x12 back in the 90s and put good speakers in it - was still a pile of shit. Cab construction is more than just a box covered in tolex IMHO.

Uberkab is unbelievably saturated, with punchier lows than a Mesa yet amazing clarity. Couldn't imagine a better cab for a modern high-gain amp.

my drummer has a uber so maybe I will give it another run with the Fortin so I can really compare the marshall with the uber side by side. When I had one I think the uberschall head was the only head I ran through it and I'm not a fan of that head that much anymore.

Not to hijack, but how would you guys compare an uber cab to my rear loaded diezel (MIG) w/ V30's. Marshall based amps (JVM 205 at the moment). I like that I can hear myself on pretty much every stage with my current set up, but I can't help to think the uber cab might be a little bigger sounding and warmer.

I haven't had all the Bogner cabs, but I currently have an Ubercab and all-black OS2X12. Both have the insulation. I had a wheat-grill OS2X12 as well until January. It also had the insulation. They're the most kick-ass cabs I've ever owned, so whatever they do to them... they sound right.

I know the standard rear load and the front load Uber comes with the insulation. The older Ubers did as well. The new OS212's do too.

another thing deferent about the Bogner cabs besides the batting on the cab back, is that the speaker baffle board is 5/8" thick instead of 3/4".

Just wanted to update. I emailed Bogner information and they said the only difference aside from the newer Uberkabs being front loaded, is that the Uberkab comes stock with 2V30's and 2T75's unless you specify otherwise. That's about it I guess. Now I just have to decide whether I want my Greenbacks front loaded or rear loaded... any advice? I do think I am leaning toward rear loaded.

i'd be a no go on the Chinese greenbacks, would rather have an Uberkab with the V30/75 mix.


now if you load up a Bogner with Webers or English Greenbacks, then we're talking!

What amp will you be using the bogner cab?

Any amp that comes my way really. I love the Recto cab with V30's, I think the cabinet personality is a perfect match for the speakers, I just want a different tonal base to work with as well. Right now I've got the 5150, but I plan on building a Ceriatone JCM800 and possibly modifying that. I also plan on revisiting a Dual Rec of some sort, as well as maybe an ENGL or two. The Greenback cabinet would be for those times when I get that vintage rock Hendrix/Zeppelin and/or doom metal hair up my ass and need to hear some real chewiness as opposed to frogs ass tight that you get all the time from the V30's.

Jake, I think the GB's will be great for your recording purposes.
I personally love the V30XT75 combo though.
I recently pulled the GB's out of my Marshall cab because although their tone was nice, they just didn't perform to my needs.
The highs were a little brittle and the lows were shallow and almost absent compared to what I need and what I'm used to.
I'll try them in a darker cab in the future, as I think that will help. The Marshall 425 cab I have is pretty bright sounding.
I ended up putting a mix of dark, thick sounding speakers in the 425 to combat the natural bright snap of the cab.

Thanks for the insight. A lot of my favorite vintage tones have been Greenbacks, so I feel like I at least need to give them an honest try. Which model Greenbacks do you have? Chinese, Brit, Heritage?
