Mesa Rectoverb 6L6 vs EL34

I've had my series2 single since 09. One of my favorite things about it is that you can get to all the preamp tubes without removing any power tubes and/or rectifier tubes (like you would on the dual/triples. That makes it very easy to audition various preamp tubes at different positions.

I had mine serial-loop modded with the addition of a send-level control (placed where the old mix knob was)
Was your loop not already Serial? But yeah, a lot more simple of an amp inside and out.

No, even the series2 were stock parallel loops.

I've always read that on the dual/triple you shouldn't run the bold and diode settings with EL34 tubes, but on the series2 single they have the EL34 option and all you can run is bold/diode settings, obviously because that is all you have on the single.
My power tube preference is 6L6 anyways, so for me it doesn't matter, but I have never understood why on the dual/triple you shouldn't, and on the single it's a given that you do. (?)

With any 6L6 in a rectifier I try to use green or blue color codes. Makes a slight difference over the usual reds and yellows that are stock.

34’s in my T-Verb do make the dirty sounds slightly more to my liking but The change is pretty big on the clean channel. If you want to veer towards classic rock on the clean setting the 34’s are good, also with the Blues setting, but I prefer it to sound like a Fender, especially with the great reverb the amp has. I have Marshall covered up the wahzoo so content to let the recto be a recto, which is 6L6 to me. Overkill, but I wouldn’t say no to a second T-Verb that I could leave as EL34.

Just get a bad ass set of 6l6s . Something differbt than what you got. I put el34s in my rectos and while still killer not as roaring

Thanks for all the great info! The el34's are on their way so I will definitely give a full report. This Recto records VERY well... When doing metal type stuff, I tend to triple track the rhythms, but even the single track leads really sound interesting... I have a feeling I'm going to like the el34's, but probably not for long...

Also, the Rectifier Recording Preamp and Fifty/Fifty is spongy and thick and might be more so than the Rectoverb... so as mentioned above,Skoora, maybe if it is interesting enough, I leave in the el34's because the 'true' Rec sound might be covered by the Rec Pre (which, by the way, seems to have WAY more bass and sponginess and sparkle than the Rectoverb).

I'll keep you all posted... perhaps I'll record a short tune with the 6l6's and then the same one with the el34's... try to get the 'best' sound out of each... lean into where they want to go...
