It's to suck as much money out of the original artist's work and most likely not give his estate a dime. Why are remasters made? Why do bands re-record albums? Why do bands re-release songs on greatest hits albums? For that matter, why do they keep making the same movies over and over with reboots?
It is either just to preserve what came before, or put a new twist on what came before.
Mastodon is another one. They've been solid. They got new shit coming down the pike.
Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal are both amazing albums, and they are great examples of ways that black metal bands use production as another "instrument" to add vibe to the music they are making
There are bands that use more "modern" production styles in black metal too - Deathspell Omega, Ondskapt, Blut Aus Nord, and Watain all come to mind - but they always do a "modern" production with a twist. Something to make it unique and synergize with the music.
DsO uses modern production clarity to make the angelic choirs and weird off-time signatures stick out more, and so you can hear everything that's going on - if the production wasn't clear and concise, you literally could not hear what it going on in the labyrinthine riffs and time signatures.
Ondskapt is slow, sludgy, and more riff based (more of a Celtic Frost influence than most black metal bands) so it makes sense that they would use the big, clear, modern (ish) sounding production to synergize with their music
I wish death metal, thrash, metalcore and other extreme metal subgenres would use modern production clarity as another tool in the arsenal to get your music across instead of the copy-paste steven slate drums plus mid quack that they all use. I honestly think they could learn something about making your records sound more individual and identifiable from black metal bands.
You just made me listen to and After that, my Black Metal journey ended.
No. Well... maybe. I'm just not really into Black Metal except for the Godfathers. Both excellent, but you're missing out on a metric fuckton of great music
Agreed. Back in the 80’s and 90’s seems like I had to search and dig through 5-10+ bands to find something cool and spend money buying a cassette only to hate it. There were tons of shit copy bands. There’s plenty of great metal out there. Just have to search beyond the known. New Khemmis is dropping next week. Sounds promising
Funny story.
I'm on my way home yesterday, finishing the last 30 of 810 miles, 5pm in DFW rush hr traffic.
Have to piss so bad it throbs. At 52yo, while well hydrated (tastes great, less filling)...this is a serious concern.
But I'm not pulling over, determined to make it home, so I don't get stuck in even worse traffic.
I'm doing all I can to keep my mind on something other than urgent need to rip down my shorts and ruin my fav hydroflask.
Then this song comes on. Never heard it before. Check out the band name. Last thing you want to see, when your teeth are floating.

Tune ain't too bad tho. I hear much worse on liquid metal.
Is that even a thing? And....why?Could have been worse…if it was Pissing Razors
