Metal is getting worse and worse

While I do agree with this, I think the cocked wah sound is a choice, and I have never been a fan of it.

Here is a recent album. It has an old school feel, and I assume next to no budget. It is not overly quacky and clicky. I think we can't blame that trend on modern budget or music industry changes.

Death definitely spawned this band, no doubt. But thats fine by me i can use more music that sounds like the mighty Death

They are basically a tribute band. They did thier inspired versions of Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual Healing. I posted their Human tribute.

They should be doing an album based on Individual Thought Patterns in a few years.

They'd better be playing real Death tunes while they're at it IMHO. The whole thing seems really weird to me, kinda like a musical perverted weirdo stalker LOL

I am not sure if they do live. I know the singer/guitar is also in Left To Die, who tours playing Leprosy/SBG tunes.

.... Yeah this was my whole point to begin with 😂

Cheers

Yeah, my whole point is that i'm not going to give a band a chance to begin with if they have that production - I don't care what their budget is. I'm well aware of the realities, I worked in studios for years lol

The problem is that it hit a critical mass for many people years and years ago, and that's fine if budgets are a consideration - but if you can't make a record without programmed drums and the same drop z quack tone maybe you shouldn't be making a record?

Sort of like Thulcandra and how they are basically a Dissection worship/tribute band.

The music isn’t necessarily worse, but the production definitely is. Everything is so quantized, sample-replaced, and brickwall-limited now that it completely kills the human element and dynamic groove

The new Between the Buried and Me album, "The Blue Nowhere," has amazing production value.

Jinjer's records have been made by Max Morton for over a decade and they sound excellent too.

It's easy to focus on what we don't like. I'm choosing to ignore it and focus on what I do like.

I really like the new Immolation record. The new Incantation is gonna be some of their best stuff yet.

I'm not sure if BTBAM are still going to Jens for the master, but Jamie King has a way with mixing those guys. They make it easy in that they are rock solid, but Jamie really does a good job keeping it clean, punchy, but not overdone. He does our drums and they are always great.

I dont like modern metal production. Its what everyone else here say it is. I would add, that they all use these big bro snare sounds that sound like a plastic bucket drenched in reverb., I also dont like most early death metal productions....I dont like most of the mushy buzz saw hm2 guitar tones. I can't distinguish notes because it sounds like mush. I know im going to get alot of backlash, but I dont like Morbid Angel Altar of Madness, or CC The Bleeding. Those type record productions I dont think sound. Maybe because i didnt grow up with it idk. I also dont like bands that were already mentioned (spirit box, periphery, Jinjer, knocked loose, etc).

So....then what IS good production that falls in between old buzzsaw mush and new clicky quantized lego grid? Where does Dimmu Borgirs Puritanical record fall on that spectrum? Because although the bass drum sounds super clicks, I can hear everything clearly and it doesnt have big bro snare sound.

Based on what I expressed, can someone post some metal albums that I personally would think sound good. Something in between modern and old school sounding.

Altars of Madness and The Bleeding are perfect.
Maybe death metal isn't for you.

Puritanical is absolutely killer in every aspect.
Pristine recording for a BM album, but It benefits the stellar performances and just works perfectly.

A lot of people consider the early 90s stuff as peak production. Those big sound, Metallica Black Album, Megadeth Countdown to Extinction, etc... era. Basically the last of the analog stuff before computers and Pro Tools got involved.

There's a method to the black metal madness

The "sounding like shit" is purposely used to create atmosphere, texture, and ambience, in a myriad of different ways.

Emperor, Ulver, and Mayhem use it on their early albums to create a huge, cathedral like vibe, like you're listening to the band play inside a castle or gothic cathedral.

Burzum and Darkthrone used analog tape compression to "smear" everything and create the sense of a dreamlike haze for the former, and the dirt and smoke of a pagan ritual for the latter.

Enslaved, Windir, and Immortal used the treble fidelity and ice-pickiness of early digital recording to create an icy, winter storm atmosphere with incredible depth of field

They may objectively "sound like shit" but they are all doing it on purpose to create atmosphere and vibe, and they do it better than 99.99999% of death metal bands - the only bands I can think of that used their production as a weapon like that (in various ways) are Morbid Angel, Carcass, and Obituary

Unfortunately, CC sounded a lot more interesting to me when they sounded like their own band
Oh I know the difference and why they do it, but that’s an excellent explanation.
I fucking love every band you mentioned.
Ulver’s “Nattens Madrigal” has got to be one of the most obvious examples of intentional ear rape the BM genre has to offer.
Those fuckers took their studio allowance, blew it on a band sports car, and recorded the album in the forest.
Now that’s BM AF! 😂
On the other hand Bergtatt is my favorite Ulver and one of the most beautifully recorded BM albums ever.
