I posted this on the Metro forum years ago...please take note.
EVH was sold his 100w Plexi by a local guitarist named Dave Logan. I've known Dave for around 15-16 years now. He can play circles around me in his sleep hungover, which is no exaggeration.
The 100w Plexi is stock. No changes, no mods, no magic pixie dust, according to Dave. If it got changed after Ed bought it, then maybe, but Dave says Ed got it mere days before VH1 was recorded.
Whether or not there are pedals involved in the whole sound isn't up for debate, there was the flanger, etc used. Whether or not there is an overdrive pedal used is another discussion.
But just to be clear here...you can get get VH1 levels of gain with a properly built, tubed and biased Plexi, whether it's a 50w or 100w. You'll need old preamp glass for sure, and probably 60/70's power tubes. Dave says his had Mullards in it when he sold it. Again, Ed could have swapped out the tubes before recording I guess, but the time was certainly short.
In recent tests done at my demo room by different VH tribute bands they've all brought over 100w Plex lead spec heads, plugged into a cab with M speakers (old pre rolas or my M75 65w), and produced very acceptable, if not down to the gnat's ass close, VH1 tones. These are the same speakers Pete Thorn uses for his demos of the Suhr SL 68 doing damned acceptable VH tones, too.
I don't get into these discussions just because there's so much misinformation and conjecture out there. But there, I've said it, twice now. You can take it or leave it. Personally, I'd rather talk to the guys who owned the gear. In this case it's either Ed or Dave Logan. I'll take their word for it over other sources.
I'm now going to get food and beer for the Super Bowl party.

Scumback what did I say personally about mightymike until he tiptoed in.The comments I made to others, whats the issue.
Well, personally, I think you flamed everyone on the Metro site with the quote below, didn't you? Didn't that include mighty mike, and every other Metro member, including myself?

I dont care......

All the people with knowledge(including myself and many others) were banned from that site.
My interpretation is this.
1) You've got issues with the Metro forum members, apparently all of them that aren't banned.
2) You've got an agenda with any Metro threads, which is why you've shown up so quickly on this one, post #3 shows that.
3) You've got the idea that you're the only logical/true source of VH1 tone. Not sure why that is, but ok, you're entitled to your opinion. Just be prepared to back it up without getting all defensive.
4) You argue with members for not totally agreeing with anything you post, here and on other forums (yeah, I've checked those now, too).
5) You seem to feel many of us are idiots and don't have a clue unless we agree with you completely and without issues or any disagreements on subjects you post about. We're not all going to do that without backup, proof, etc.
As I said, this is what I've gleaned from doing a search on your posts on various forums this morning. It appears to be accurate based on your previous posts. I've only gone back three years, but that's what I've found so far.
Calling people names isn't going to get your points across without some kind of reaction. Poor punctuation, grammar, spelling and a condescending attitude isn't going to help, either. Maybe you don't think that's necessary, but many do, and as such, I think your posts aren't taken seriously because you don't present them to be taken seriously.
In my opinion, you really hurt your own credibility with these posting traits. I think I'm done with this subject now. It must be the cold meds I'm taking that allowed me to focus on this for a morning! I learned long ago you can only devote so much time to a problem/issue/misunderstanding to correct or resolve it before having to walk away and accepting it for whatever it is.
That's what I'm going to do now.
