OK. That's enough. It's my thread. Ted, thanks for clarifying. You're back on my list and you're absolutely invited to discuss your amp. :-)

I'm interested in any amp Doug Rappaport plugs into, and Pete Thorn for that matter. Haha! Those 2 guys are the cause for most of my GAS and my diminishing bank account. Lance K. is coming up on that list as well.

Back to discussion.

fair enough.

the Landry i just received last week is actually the one Doug just did his demo with....for some reason, it sounds great but not as great as when he played through it...

wonder what the problem is

When Doug did the demos for my amp I was standing a few feet in front of him and the dude is just unreal. He played for over 2 hours and was a pleasure to work with.

he really is a phenomenal player...just a really tasteful player (at least to me sensibilities, anyway).

in looking through old youtube clips for some demos of PWE's i saw there were quite a few with him but i havent listened to them yet...im sure ill enjoy them!

Bill just sent me a link to that video last week. Doug really captured the singing lead tonees that amp is capable of. That's a dude who needs to be playing in the trio if Satch and Vai ever do G3 again. I'll bet if you lay down some tracks and come back to them a few weeks later then the tone will be there. Sounds like you inundated yourself with amp awesomeness and are overloaded. Take a rest on that one for a while and see if it grabs you when you come back.

nah, i was jus joking - the landry is awesome. i was just commenting on what a better player doug is and how you cant replace hands in the tonal equation!

Doug should do an instrumental album the way he plays on YouTube. I quite enjoyed Pete Thorn's Nerd album, so I'd bet Doug could do something equally cool.

Doug does have a solo album but it's not quite what he sounds like on YouTube. It's called Bionic. He needs to make a new album. Doug, if you're listening....it's time.

Sorry to bring back this old thread, but I just wanted to say that I was at Destroy All Guitars the other day and got to AB the Landry G3, Metroplex, and Reeves Super 78 and the Metroplex killed both, especially for playing leads. The Metroplex was the most open, organic, articulate, and ballsy. It was the best Marshally amp I've ever played. The Landry though had possibly the best clean of any high gain amp I've ever heard, but not sure if it would beat the cleans of my Wizard.

Hey braintheory , how would you compare the Landry to you Henniing Cherry Bomb ?

The Landry is more gainy and saturated. I expected the Landry to be more vintage sounding but it can actually get pretty modern if set up that way. The Cherry Bomb is brighter and more open and more comparable to the Wizard.

Thanks for the response . That surprised me , I thought the Cherry Bomb would be more saturated .

I've played a Landry and owned a Cherry Bomb, and I much preferred the Landry. The Landry was much tighter. Not that tighter is necessarily better, because I do dig a little sag, but the Cherry Bomb is very loose and flubby on the low end. I always had it clean boosted with an OD-9 to tighten it up. The Landry has just the right amount of sag to retain a somewhat vintage character, yet just tight enough without sounding too modern.

What did you think of the Reeves? I was curious about that amp and if it's more Plexi or 800. That and the amorris GCM-008 are on the list of amps id like to compare to the Metro-Plex to see if they offer up something different enough to justify them.

The Reeves was good, but my least favorite of the 3. It had this inherent raspiness/slight harshness that I didn't like, and the bottom end wasn't as tight as the other amps, so the chugs weren't the best. I preferred it to the Landry for playing leads, but the Metroplex still smoked it for leads and sounded better overall.

I also really don't get why some guys here are describing the Metroplex as being smeared or fuzzy sounding. It was one of the most articulate amps I've tried. I don't think there's any amp I've tried that I'd says has better clarity but maybe a few that are similarly good.

i haven't been able to try a reeves but what you described is exactly what i tend to hear in the clips. the bottom seemed potentially loose and overpowering and the top end just doesn't do it for me.

your comments on clarity is interesting - i find the Landry exceedingly clear and articulate (almost too much so, for me)...it does have a ton of sizzle but somehow the note separation is still always present...its sort of a really unique blend of 'tight' in a way but still a lot of complexity to individual notes.

just to me, i DO find the MP to be a bit more 'smeared' (i guess i know what people mean by that)/...its not overly loose but its definitely plexi vs 800...and there is a certain 'give' to the MP that makes it seem like moreso.

all that being said, even though the Landry is clearly an awesome amp i get a lot more visceral enjoyment playing the MP (i own both, for right now).

While working on the MP design I spent a lot of time running frequency sweeps and comparing the response of old amps and cabs. Ultimately, I found that certain frequencies tend be musical and other tend to sound like white noise and harsh. By emphasizing the musical freq's I was able to get the attack on the notes and articulation. By notching out harsh freq's I was able to clean out harshness and leave behind a sweeter, more vintage tone.

Anyone with a modern sounding amp should try inserting a 31 band graphic or a parametric EQ in the loop. Makes cuts between 1-5k and listen to hear which ones are better in and which ones are better cut.
