I would call the Mills a brick house that holds speakers. A very big sounding cab with a lot of bass but lacks a resonant woody character. The Classic is the smaller version, isn't as open but has the same vibe. I think they are great cabs if you are a high-gained metal player that likes to do chugga chugga but not for the vintage players. YMMV IMO.

I somewhat agree with this... I've got an original '67 Marshall SLP which I run thru a early '70s Marshall 4X12 with H30s, and it pretty much is THE holy grail tone as far as plexi tones go. So if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
;)

but the Mills kills for high gain. Literally.

Mills = Modern chug chug Metal

Marshall, Stoneage, Bogner = Classic Rock (farty bass if you try to get wall of bass tones from modern metal music out of it, using MCP pickups as well)

My Bogners with Rola G12-80s sound more "metal" than my V30 Mills. You say chug chug like its a bad thing

Regarding the whole marshall farty low end and mills super tight chugging, I think that the splawn cab I've got is a really good compromise between the two types of sounds.

It has a very rich and full low end and lower midrange, is very clean and punchy with good articulate sound on stage but not stiff and abrasive like the diezel and mesa cabs. The upper end cuts but is still smooth.

that's just the voice of the cab.. I've used about a dozen different speakers in the cab and it has always shown these qualities no matter what speakers were in it.

I thought you were supposed to be going to visit the Mills factory for a side-by-side comparsion with your Splawn cabs.

I was but some ill shit went down at work and I had to stay here that weekend :aww:

I can't remember the last time I played chugga chugga with my Mills. :D The thing is woodier sounding than any of the Mesa cabs I've owned (Stiletto, Oversized, Road King) or the Marshall 1960 I had. My Marshall 1982a has a woodier vibe too it than the Mills, but the Mills still has a woodiness/warmth/character/whatever to it the makes it work. Yeah, it's an oversized cab and it does metal well, but it's not a one trick pony by any means. I'd still probably give the edge to something like a marshall or splawn for a vintage sound, but don't discount the Mills.

No, he's right. I'm really bummed and depressed that I sold both my Mills cabs and bought another brand 412 with Greenbacks because I just don't sound good any more. I'm making this all up to make me feel better about not having my Mills cabs and not being in the family. Sorry guys, will you please forgive me?

I'll forgive you only if you send me another pair of your thongs. You have to wear them first though . :inlove:

I'm back on the "V30's sound like shit" opinion and i can't say i like anything about those K100 speakers. I thought Greg's Mills cab sounded ok, but there really wasn't anything woody about it at all IMHO. Sounded better for heavier stuff. I'd like to hear a regular sized Mills cab loaded with Greenbacks, or make that Scumbacks.

For the record, I hated, just fucking hated, K100s in my Mills cab. Not saying the speaker was the fault, but to me, it was an awful pairing. I kind of like V30s and they sound better in a Mills than in other cabs, but still, really didn't care for them in the Mills. I really liked the WGS Reapers and ET65 in there (not at the same time) and the G12-80s I have now sound amazing. With a warmer speaker, the cab really develops a character that you don't get with the speakers that are typically loaded in them. And I would love to load my Mills up with some Scumback M75 or H75s. Next time I have some cash just lying around, I may actually do it.

I'm going to mail you a copy of that speaker demo CD really soon. It includes Scumbacks, Eminences, etc along with the usual Celestions.
