If more power means louder, you can use 6550s but Peter does not recommend them any more.
I still have 2 of them mixed with 4 EL34 in my Herbert
I dont know if mixing tubes is possible with the hagen - with the VH4 it is definately not.

Billy Corgan used 6l6s in his VH4. Sounded frickin amazing in person back in 2000.

Rez, it should be in the Hagen manual. It's in my Herbert manual and I can mix in pairs any of the following power tubes. However I've read in the past that Peter is not in favor of mixing power tubes even though it is available in Herbert. Below are some tubes that can be mixed in Herbert and their suggested mA setting.

EL34/6CA7: Aggressive, slender low end, higher total harmonic
distortion… Recommended bias setting: 30-35mA

5881/6L6: Great tube for clean sounds, good bluesy tones, also has
strong bass and excellent clarity… Recommended bias
setting: 25-35mA

6550: Very loud, very good dynamics, strong low end, amazingly
percussive… Recommended bias: 40-60mA

KT88/KT100: Similar to 6550, but very punchy with great clarity and
warmth… Expensive… Recommended bias: 35-50mA

This is pretty awesome info, good post KC..!! Question though - with my VH4, it has a bias switch to go from 6L6 style glass to EL34 style glass. I don't know if the Herbert has this, or it it just has the range available to it. But this would be a fairly important consideration with the Hagen if one were so inclined to change the actual tube type (ie: 5881 or 6L6).

Cheers
Mo

Mixing tubes is like using out of phase microphons

Hello Mo. I don't have a whole lot of information about the patriarch VH4. With Herbert you simply pop in pairs slots 1&6, 2&5, 3&4 and your good-to-go.

Honestly I've wasted several hours and $$$ on all the power tubes I listed and I've always come around full circle to the original configuration. Power section
6xRuby EL34BSTR, preamp 6x12AX7C and every time I fire up my (who’s been with me for 6 years now) Herbert I find new and exciting tones.

I like the Very loud concept. but what I'm specifically looking for is to alter the upper mid attack more in the 2nd channel of the Hagen, maybe I should be looking at Preamp tubes.

Do you have a master list like this for Preamp variation?
Unfortunately not. Gain structure, PI, reverb and whatnot will be more prevalent with preamp tubes. Your paunchiness, loudness, cleans, et cetera and your more general feel characteristics will come from the power tubes; at least that’s my experience.

Good to know. Just seeing if any of the extra capabilities like this should be explored. :)
Definitely explore until your bank account runs dry. We tone heads do it at one time or another. Different tubes for different folks...

With my herbert:
i went from 6 el34 to 6 6550 tubs, less mids and a punch that was unbelievable, verry clear.....the low end was sick
i missed the mids the el34 had and the feel so i played with different sets like 2X6550 and 4Xel34
in the end i got back to 6 el34, its just personal prefference.

Yep I just eventually came to realize that the master is all knowing and stocks his amps with what Peter's exceptional R&D eventually cried out for tube wise.

you guys already know what im gonna say..... but in a close 2nd place are KT77s.... :D
