Agreed. I played around with Tungsols as well and ended up taking them out (went with ehx 7025's) as it was too gainy. Even then I don't think I ever needed to go above 12 o'clock for enough gain/saturation for leads or thrash style playing.

Then again, I am not really a gainiac.

Yeah even on this video I had red channel gain at 4/10

It’s not that big of a difference in my opinion. The mod adds a bit more gain and compression to the red channel. It’s a simple one to have done or do yourself. It’s a 10K resistor in series with a 1uF poly cap across the stock 10K cathode resistor (R12) on the red channel.
