Most brutal amp

One person's brutal is another person's meh. BUT, some of the best 'brutal' tones I've heard were just old Marshall JCM 800's with a boost. Some of the tones on the Opeth albums with the Laney's (VH100's I think) they used are pretty killer too.

Opeth has good tone, but not exactly what i would call "brutal". Sepultura's boosted 800 tones on the other hand...
 
so this is how I understand brutal. i was playing my old Herbert a few years back about a month after i had gotten it. i wanted to see what it would do and nobody was home. so i rolled the volume down on my SG and went up to the amp and turned the master vol to about 4 o'clock and the channel 3 volume the same. i took a few steps back and when i rolled my guitar volume up a few bad things happened. the first thing i noticed was that all of my organs became very irritated; or rather it felt like someone very large was shaking my torso with vigor. the next thing was that I collapsed on the floor along with all of the stuff on my end table next to the amp. quickly i rolled the volume back down and shut the amp off. when i got the amp off i could hear my sisters cat shouting in the other room. i have never heard a cat shout before.

because of this the Herbert is the most brutal amp i have ever had a run in with. :aww: :rock:
 
Out of the common, easy to find amps, I like the boosted Triple Recto, or the boosted 5150.

I tend to find amps that are sort of looser, or sludgy boosted tight are way better for brutal sounds than amps meant to be super tight and clear.
 
I'd have to go with my Fortin Gainmonster or my Cameron modded block letter 5150. Both of them define brutality in different ways, but the 5150 will go extremely heavy with the gain pretty much dimed on channel 1, which was very surprising to me. Another one that totally kills is the Engl Steve Morse signature amp. I've got one right now, but I'm going to return it to Musician's Friend. I'm hell bent on getting, believe it or not, a Line 6 DT50 tube head with a smidge of digital modeling. That fucker will go totally brutal too, but so far the amps I've named are about as brutal as they come to me.
 
Just spent 3 days with my buddy's Twin Jet. It's "brootal", but no more so than my Pittbull Ultra Lead. The UL has got the EQ and seems tighter to my ears. Also more hi-fi'ish. The TJ (in typcal Bogner fashion) is very organic and rich. Each have their strengths and weaknesses (depending on how you view them). Both brutal and both great modern rock/metal amps.

I spent the whole three days working back and forth between these two amps, as well as my XTC Classic. Half the time I was running two at-once in a stereo-wet/dry mode. I've found that most amps -- even "high gain" amps, start to sound muddy/mushy to me with the gains above noon. I want clarity and definition. So when I think of a "brutal" amp, I think of an amp that stays tight and clear, NOT one that turns to flabby mush. And so for my personal definition of the term, even my XTC Classic is brutal, because the way I use it, it hits very hard and stays tight. Maybe not QUITE as well as the Uberschall and Pittbull, but very close. S'all good!!!
 
To me, "brutal" is like an immense beast with a guttural deep growl that shears your face off with a huge wallop.

It's big, but it's defined. Solid. It doesn't stab you to death, it bludgeons you to a pulp but with a thick core of barbed razor wire. It's wide but has that sharpness.

I don't think there's just one amp out there that can do it. You need at least two and combine them.

I have to agree with this. I sold my Pitbull UL after getting the VH140C. Dying Fetus and Suffocation brutality all the way. For Brutal DM tones, the best I have found. There are amps I like more for leads and other things, but for sheer brutality it really is the king. Crushes.

I gotta say I consider this particular guitar tone as more mean and demonic, than a lot of more modern 'brutal' guitar tones.
I almost feel scared listening to it.... :scared:

Valvestate 8100. Can be had on the cheap. R.I.P. Chuck.....

I like them, and will surprise you. For the Metal guy on a budget, a good choice. A lot better choices out there, depending on your budget.
