I think the 498/500s in that guitar are pure shit, so anything is an improvement. I had a Rio BBQ in there before - I really liked it except the bottom end was a tad too loose. Not a problem on the Afwayu, but it doesn't clean up as nicely and the mid range and high end is a bit hifi sounding to my ears. The neck is "airy" as you put it, defined, but again a bit "hifi" to my ears, and just a tad sterile sounding - I want something just a tad "sweeter". Note: I think I am really picky and anal when it comes to this stuff and have pretty sensitive ears. I think I want to try an Aldrich in the bridge next, though others complaints on the neck have me concerned about that neck PUP.

There is a little bit of the "Hi-fi" quality in there, but it's really really really awesome for clean tones, and kind of goes away during the more high gain stuff to my ears. These things have amazing pretty cleans for how and full they are! It's not the annoying type of clean like you get with the "pearly gates" where it almost doesn't sound real, or like the tone is covered up or something.
Yea man those pickups really aren't very good. The Afwayu really does help tighten up the les paul for sure. I wouldn't call these pickups sterile at all, I did have to toy around with my EQ a little bit because the amount of treble I was able to use was greatly improved. I've heard a LOT of pickups and these are about the sweetest I've heard with out sounding plastic like for lack of a better term.
I personally am not a big fan of Suhr pickups in general, the FL's are really cool single coils but still sound a little thin for Suhr guitars at least to my ears, I bet they kill in strats. I replaced my neck with an anderson SF2 and it really filled up the sound a lot better from my Suhr. I've also got WCR Darkbursts in my Stinnett custom. They are great pickups, VERY direct and chimey with a lot of note separation and clarity, to me for that "old school" sound they absolutely NAIL it. If your really looking for PURE tone WCR's are great, and when I mean pure I mean no real coloration or sound, they are very transparent in that respect, and well balanced as well. I wouldn't call them very modern pickups though and SOMETIMES I feel they are a little hard to get a thick tone out of, which is why I'm considering swapping the MCP's into my Stinnett and the WCR's in my Paul, I think it may work out incredibly well.
