Mr. Big still tearing it up!

I wish Paul would ditch this pedal for all the distortion philosophy and go back to decent full size amps. He still plays like a maniac, but the tone sounds like a kids practice setup in the 90s.

I think it's affected his playing. Amps can track a lot faster than a pedal setup for high gain and force more from you to do it. He also downplays playing fast all the time because he says so many go for speed before they're ready for it but he himself has forgot the passion behind the fast notes....

I just don't feel the fire in that video or the song. Might as well have been some AI generated version. Was like a limp dick version of Colorado Bulldog.

I liked him with his Racer X modded Marshalls, with his preamps, with his Laneys, with his Marshall Vintage Modern, with his 2061x. All of it was great. For done reason in recent years he decided to use overdrive pedals as his main gain tone. It sounds exactly like that. Maybe he’s trying to protect his hearing. Don’t know.

That's a crazy tune! Paul and Billy shred through it while making it looks like an easy ride. Not a fan either of his new "pedal" only sound but if it works for him why not.

I saw Paul at NAMM last week. He was jammin' with Steve Morse (both were very good) and here is Paul's rig for the quick performance

Paul still rips but not loving his tone these days
His tone is shit and has been for like 8 years now..insists on this transistor driven pedal distortion into clean amps. He sounded good through those boosted Laneys so it surprises me he moved away from them.

Agreed. I couldn't listen the whole way through.. felt weak and uninspired.

I agree his tones blow. IMO, he could get a better sound with pedal-driven tones, but his pedal choices are poor.
In his defense, Paul mentioned, when he tours or does seminars, it's usually
a shit amp for backline, so he's using pedals to get his tones thru things like Fender Twins.

boosted? which pedal? i always believed he played direct to the laneys, his best tone for sure

I thought he nudged them with the AC booster even back then or the BB preamp.. the OD always changed but it was never the core tone, just a tad to tighten the amp. So really, the Laney was the key.

I still like the Laneys best. Much of his solo stuff earlier on was the GH's, and VH100R combos.
