Vivian Campbell appreciation thread!

Starting with a Riverdogs clip that kinda slipped under the radar, but Viv's tearing up the fretboard on most of the solos on it as well as the Purple SLO R was used on mostly every track.

Here with the Last in LIne and I believe he was using an ENGL Blackmore for most of the stuff. RIP Jimmy Bain.

Back in high school, my buddy had the old DIO VHS tape from the Last in Line Tour and rrally became a Vivian fan. He almost doesn't exist in Whitesnake or Def Leppard for me because he had to step into a made band.

Was a huge fan back in the day. I was always disappointed after Dio. Like he was gone. I get it, of course. He made money. I am glad he is playing this music and still can wail like he used to.

One of my favs, was just listening to the first Dio album the other day. Viv slams on that thing. I always liked Viv because he kinda went for it, you could hear the Gary Moore influence as well.

Riverdogs first album is IMO his high water mark as a player. By this point he was extremely well rounded, solo's were more planned out etc...

Honestly it's embarrassing to watch Phil Collen handle all the fast parts on Leppard and he really on has that fast slurring lick that sounds like mush. Knowing Viv is basically backup those guys should be ashamed lol. Don't blame Vivian though, huge steady paycheck for the last few decades and playing sold out tours ain't a bad way to live.

Man that Whitesnake tour with Vivian and Adrian was fantastic. I saw that tour three times and everytime those guys were trying to out do each other. I read a quote from Coverdale one time where he said they were gunslingers each night of which he benefitted.

Now neither were Sykes obviously, and I was lucky enough to see Sykes with Whitesnake but if you were a fan of shred, those guys went at it each night.

At the time I was massive Vandenberg fan, still a huge fan of his early work in fact in terms of solo composition, he was on Rhoads level. But honestly Vivian was a better fit stylistically for Whitesnake as his base is very Gary Moorish whereas solo wise, Vandenberg during that era was very euro influenced.

I still think had Adrian actually played on Slip of the Tounge and he and Viv split the guitar duties that album would have been alot better.

I don't even consider what he does in Leppard a representation of his actuall playing as that is just a big paycheck for him and I haven't even listened to that band after Pyromania as they became a slick pop rock band at that point.

Yes, been a Norn Iron man myself; Vivian is a player I have really admired. Loved the solo to Stand Up and Shout as a kid and still do. So much energy!

I got to see that tour. He was like a kid back then, (and Dokken opened up). Incredible show. Dio was awesome as well, (of course).

Little doubt Dio suffered once he left. Whatever it was, they had it. Ronnie never had another hit album after they fired Vivian. Oddly one of my favorite all time solo's is by Craig Goldy on the "Time to Burn" tune but in general, wasn't a fan of the Dream Evil album. It just had no fire to it.

Our little neck of the woods has overproduced in terms of great players. Viv and Gary and Rory, and now great to see Simon McBride going well with Deep Purple.

For me the first 3 Dio albums I can hear the heavy rock version of Gary Moore influence all over Vivian's solos that's full of piss and vinegar and fire and even though I don't dislike the Dream Evil album it's clear in Craig Goldy's playing that he was influenced heavily by Richie Blackmore and the album actually seems more like a heavier Rainbow album with Dio.
