Murphy Aged Rant

Sorry man, that’s the gayest take I’ve heard in a while. “Earning” distress and aging? No less ridiculous than “earning” a different color or a faded pair of jeans. And comparing it to people impersonating Veterans is just jumping the shark 🙄

well, I defer to your gay expertise, clearly you know more about that than most of us here.

what would you call fake / artificial aging and distress of a new guitar vs a guitar that was aged and distressed over years of use? The first guitar is a poser, made to look used on purpose; while the second guitar aged organically through years of use. Can't see the difference?

do you buy a new car, and have it purposely aged and distressed too? Add some rust, scratches, a few dents,...? Sounds ridiculous, right? But it's fine to do to a new guitar.

a relic guitar is contrived. enjoy the fauxness!

edit: it's your money, pay extra for someone to distress and damage your new guitar.

let me know when you want me to relic your car for you. this way it will match your guitar.

Is this what you think about when you don’t gig anymore?

enjoy and defend your fake-ass aged and distressed new guitars at extra cost.

It's what I think about when someone posts about fake aged and distressed new guitars.

please share pics of your relic'd new car when you get a chance. Maybe on the way to your next gig with your faux finished new guitar?

Gigging doesn't make your faux finished guitar any more real. Nice conflation, is conflation a natural part of your gayness expertise? :D

I like relic guitars if it’s real light on the body because the necks usually feel very nice. Heavy relic on a body I dislike a lot. There’s a Charvel that’s a Hum/SC and reverse headstock, where I dig that config, but it’s a guy’s Sig model and the body relicing is stupidly over the top. Just makes it a hard no. It’s a white guitar but almost half of the body is bare wood. He’s a European player but his name and band escape me.
I’d dig whatever they do for the M2M Gibson R9’s I see at Guitar Center.
The first Gen roadworn Fenders from Mexico were great. Especially the 60’s Strat and the 50’s Tele. Wish I hadn’t sold the Tele.

I also love a brand new shiny guitar. Even though I’m a Gibson guy, I think the Jackson USA RR24 in white (non pin striped one) with no accents and black pickups and hardware, reverse headstock looks badass.

I agree with this. A brand new $5K Gibson Custom feels like the luthier fogot to finish filing the frets and put some honey on the neck. a new $6K Custom Murphy feels out of the box like a guitar that someone has already put a decade of break-in work into, much smoother & easier to play. This is what I like, could care less about how it looks on the wall. Here's me gigging my '68 Custom Murphy and the R8 Murphy, the vid is through a Dual Rec RI.

There’s this odd thing the anti-relic crowd does where they feel the need to inform us how the finishes were applied, as if we’re unaware. “Hey, you know that relic you knowingly purchased with dings in it replicating an old guitar? Those dings are fake. I am smart, now can you hand me that towel to wipe the brains falling out my ass, please?”

My two relic Strats costs me $1100 each and are built to the exact specs I wanted. $400 bodies, $350 necks, finished and delivered. Not every relic is a Murphy Lab or a FCS.

I think the part that gets me the most is that 99.8% of relic haters will have an infinite amount of gear pics in their post histories and 0 fuckin’ music while they’re calling other people fake and posers.

Bottom line, if a guitar’s finish means more to you than the music made with it, I question your motives for playing guitar to begin with, if you even play.

Its not about how I think other think it looks. For me, I bond with guitars that i don't have to worry about putting a scratch or ding on. Additionally, part of a good relic is rolling the board edges and neck and contact area not a super sticky plasticized finish. That said, to get those areas work in and make the instrument feel broken in, I dont know of a way to accomplish this with a relicing process, but at least make it look natural. The car analogy isnt really comparable.

well, I wouldn't buy a new guitar or car that is artificially aged or damaged to look used; so in that case it's comparable.

it's your money. if you want to pay new guitar prices + more for fake aging and added damage, that's up to you.

if I buy a used guitar, buckle rash, dings, dents finish wear, and finish missing (like tips of point guitars), etc., those are usually reasons to look to pay less for the guitar. at least how I see it.

Having someone faux age and purposely damage a new guitar and charge more for it...is not for me. no thanks. I'll put the damage on it, accidently or through use; and if I keep it long enough it will age eventually.

Cheers!

You keep going back to the “charge more for it” as if the ONLY options one has to get a relic is a Murphy Lab or Fender Custom Shop.

Both my relic Strats were $1100 to make.,all US-made parts.

You cannot buy a perfectly finished US-made, nitro finished Strat body for less than the cost of a US-made, nitro-finished relic body. You can’t even buy a Mexican made, partially nitro finished body from Fender for less than $550.

But you can buy US-made, 100% nitro bodies from MJT for $400 all day long. They’ll also allow you to drop ship a neck to them where they’ll slap some nitro on it for $100. If anything, I believe they upcharge for a non-relic’d body because they have to put more labor into it finishing it 100% of the way.

And if you’re talking a whole guitar, the closest thing Fender makes to one of mine is more than twice the cost of both my Strats.

IMO, it’s fucking stupid to spend more than twice on a guitar without the specs you actually want, when you can get exactly what you want for less than half the cost. If I bought the guitar above I’d still have to spend the money re-radiusing the fingerboard, installing SS frets and then re-finishing it, putting it well above the $3K mark.

I won’t even purchase a guitar costing more than $1500 because it’s simply not necessary unless one believes purchasing prestige is a thing.

Comparing a guitar to stolen valor is fucking absurdly retarded, so is comparing a guitar to a car.

Relic guitars just feel better, the contact points are significantly smoother.

yes, because the relic'd guitar has fake aging and damage.

the car analogy illustrates the point: - it's absurd for cars, or just about any other new product...where any damage you get a discount, not extra costs.

buying a new product with fake age and damage; only guitarists buy new products with fake aging and damage.

stolen valor is fake military service. relic is fake age and damage. pretty consistent.

building your own vs buying a finished product is always different.

There are many markets for distressed products... guitars, clothes, furniture, books... many markets for that, not really a market for a car to be pre distressed from the factory.

As for the stolen valor thing.. fuck off with this bullshit. Especially with us on the weekend of Memorial day... stolen valor is a very serious issue, and its fucking ridiculous you would even try and make a connection between buying a relic guitar, vs pretending to be a vet.

You play covers right.. you didn't write them you are just a phony pretending to be in a band you were never in... calling someone a poser for playing a cover song sounds pretty retarded right?? Its about as dumb as these anti relic claims.

relic guitars are posers too.

fake and contrived guitars, clothes, furniture, etc., are fake; like posers.

who buys fake shit? who pays new prices for damaged goods?

learning to play a cover takes time and effort; writing originals takes time and effort; actually aging a guitar takes time...that's real; that's genuine. fake aging and intentional damage...still fake.

fake is fake.
