We replaced ours last month after limping it along for too many seasons. Even knowing it was coming only softens the blow so much! I hate spending ‘tread water’ money - spending a chunk of money just to make everything like it was the day before misfortune struck!

I just put a new system in. 4 ton 14 seer. compressor, coil, forced air furnace. $6700 all in, shop around.

Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods there isn't much choice when you're up against a timeline, and trying to keep from being murdered by a sweaty wife. ?

I would definitely shop around if I were replacing a working system though, for sure. My wife calls me a "researcher" when it comes to buying most things. I rarely make a large purchase without coming at it from all angles, but sadly my options are limited due to the need to replace quickly.

Thankfully, this isn't really dipping into the "tread water" money for me but it's getting dang close. It is, however, severely putting the hurt on the disposable G.A.S fund.. :ROFLMAO: That Headfirst amp in the classifieds is killin' me right now.

I’m done fuckin around with it. I will be replacing my shit. At the very least it will also have a switch to be able to run with a portable generator but might go with a whole home unit.

I got a new AC here in Central Florida about 7 years ago. Got the 10 year parts and labor warranty fortunately because that thing breaks twice a year.. usually on a three day holiday weekend on Friday. They'll come out and look at it right away but can't get parts usually until after the weekend. They don't make them like they used too. Living in a hot and humid place like Florida makes me want to learn how to work on these myself. But I grew up in Little Rock and Arkansas is way hotter and more humid in the summer than Florida.. don't know about NW Ark though. Maybe your up high in the mountains? When I retire.. I'm moving out west where there is no humidity.

They've had to replace four coils in 7 years and they make me pay for the freon to refill it.. anything outside the unit in not in the warranty. I always ask the guys who come out what I should get next time and they say they are all junk these days. I guess new EPA regulations make them use more corrosive types of freon at higher pressures these than in the past.

2.5 ton 15 seer going in at the end of the week, a little under $6k. old unit was 27 years old, ended up with a hole in the coil. We've been on borrowed time with this one for a while, seems to cost me $500 a year for little repairs, refrigerant, etc. Finally just bit the bullet, hope to see some energy savings.
