That’s awesome, congrats. I think you got a good deal too.
On your note about the Quick Rod, hit me up if/when you’re ready for that. I just got one, but I have too many amps now.

I don't plan on a QR soon tbh. I will likely snag a Fryette deliverance first or an EVH5153.

Quick Rod man, Quick Rod !!
;)
That is a cool setup, congrats again.

Thanks again! If you have the QR and I have the cash, I will get yours :)

Right on cool amp man . I really like my my Super Sport EL34s amps . The one in my Avatar was originally a 6V6 version and I had a local tech mod it for EL34s , the other which has the small head shell came from Splawn with EL34s , great amps . If you plan on sticking with the 6V6s JJs 6V6 worked really good for me

Thanks! I am just going to leave it with the 6V6's.

The tubes in it are pretty much brand new, no need to change yet. But yeah I will go JJ for 6V6's. JJ is my go-to pretty much. If I stray away from the norm it's a tung sol in the first gain slot and/or a Sovtek LP'S for the PI. I mostly use JJ's for power tubes too. Cheap and I have not really found anything more reliable.

Oh yeah boi! That is sweet. Congrats.

Thanks! I am really impressed with it. I have never heard a small amp with this big of balls before. It's totally giggable may have a little bit of dirt in your cleans, but shit this thing is loud. Lol

It also excels with blues tones on the clean channel.

How does it "rumble" for a 6v6 amp? Considering the big iron it (should) have? Can you get close to at least 50w Rumble with the head?

Massive iron and huge balls, bass, and thunder for 22watt. I have not dimed it, but it's solid and stays together at high volumes. So far I have only ran it into the matching Splawn cab, I am going to try it into a 4x12 with celestion k85's and post results.

There’s a local Quick Rod for sale, but I’ve never tried one.
Can someone tell me how they compare to say a JCM 800 in terms of feel and tone?
I’ve read they are a little stiffer and the midrange is in a different place. Listening to videos I’m not sure, thanks!

Man...I've not played a JCM 800 in a LONG time, but from my old memory and compared to the DroB+ QR with loop level controls I had, I'd agree with it being a little stiffer and the mids are definitely in a different place. The QR was definitely tighter, more articulate, and punchier. I'd put the QR I had up there in my top 5 amps I've owned. A/B'd it for quite some time against the Wizard MCII I grabbed and was a little torn on which I wanted to keep, but in the end the Wizard was a bit more more articulate, open, and punchy, and the mids were much more where I liked them as compared to the QR.

I'll take a stab at this as I don't think STSB will mind. Feel free to start your own thread too if you want more opinions.

Stiffer and more bass is how I would describe it. I actually created a thread on the Splawn proboards on this exact topic. Some prefer a straight up 800 tone so there is nothing wrong with that.

Tonally, I would say they are very close. I'd say the 800 is a bit more hairy and the QR is a bit more modern. That's me.

I think the bigger differences as to why someone may consider a Splawn would be: 3 gears are like having 3 different Marshalls. Clean channel is good and stays clean but can get a touch hairy. Loop is fantastic. Foot switchable channel, OD1/OD2 and Solo (new ones are 4 button to include a Gear switch). OD1/OD2 and Solo boost are all very usable and recognizable. Half power switch. Transformers are huge. Amp is super quiet at idle. Also, it could be argued that Splawns have better build quality. Newer amps also have old/new, mid cut, sag switch options. Other stuff.

Keep in mind, I don't use my QR like most people (80's hair metal). I use for drop tuned 'C' type stuff where the boosts and tightness and clarity and bass response etc etc really shine. I run at half power, treble on '0', Gear 2, OD 2, Splawn cab (Small Blocks).

All that said.....there is something to be said for a straight up 2203 etc. :D

@311 you know I don't mind! You are the one who turned me on to splawn.

Let the thread grow and evolve! Cheers.

I have never pitted a JCM800 against a QR myself, but I would go splawn any day from any QUALITY clip I have heard for MY taste. I play Southern metal I guess is what you could call it. A little bit of NOLA type stuff, but a little more groove orientated. Keep in mind that I have KT88's as opposed to EL34's in my big boys. If you are looking for slayer tone, you may be slightly better served by a JCM800, newer metal, splawn. I don't play, nor care for hair metal so I will not speak on that.

I think that the only companies that I have tried or seen gut shots of that are on the same level of Soldano, wizard, bogner and diezel. (never played a Friedman but they look good too).

Splawns are built like a tank. The transformers are so heavy that you can't carry it anywhere near straight as the weight is lopsided. EVERY component in there is top quality, the construction and attention to detail of even the solder joints are amazing. I don't think that you can get a better amp built for the money as far as quality goes.

The versatility is great too,far beyond any JCM. Much better cleans (obviously lol) you can lay some sick blues down on first gear at any volume.

I really do like this little Supersport though. Big balls in a small box. It has loads of bass too, which is unsuspected.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I find that when I stray from Marshall I always get disappointed and end up going back. Always been curious about the Splawns. This seems to have all the new options, old/new, drop b+ switch etc. I'm also unsure about resale value if I don't jive with it. (Although I know my best selling place would be here ;)

You can find them under a grand stupid easily. Turn around and sell it, you likely won't be out much at all other than shipping.

But if you are diehard JCM800 kind of guy, you may be best sticking to what you have. I would take a a splawn over one, but I am not you ?.

I will say though if you want to pick up something smaller, the Supersport delivers. I have not managed to find a flaw in it yet tbh.

Awesome setup, man! That was quite the trade! Post some clips.

Thanks! I definitely got a good deal.

Once I figure out recording better, I will definitely post some clips.

Just sold my KT88 Nitro as I decided I’m more of a QR guy. Have a 2006 and a 2014. Different but both equally magical. 2014 is “angrier.”

That said, I picked up a Super Sport combo shortly after Scott launched them and it’s gotta be the best bang for the buck combo running. The tones are just sick. I gigged mine with my old thrash band. My 22w Super Sport held its own no problem against the other player’s Mesa MK IIC++ and 4x12. Play one and you’ll understand.
