Could not agree more...I bought one earlier this year and posted a long winded review. My thoughts on the amp have not changed. I bought a mint condition 2023 model cheap. Best value for an amp that I have experienced in many years.
I have never had mine tuned up much past shouting volume and I don't gig with it...I may have just gotten a "good" one, but at reasonable volumes I don't find it to be all that noisy for a high gain amp.
I felt the same way as well. The JVM is cool amp, but it really needs a gate, which makes sense why they added one for the Satriani JVM. There is also a certain amount of compression that is hard to dial out or unhear once you compare it to another Marshall.
I hear people say that. but mine is not terribly noisy... I used mine today with band and we play loud in small room and not bad and our room does not the cleanest power. Often excess noise is related to something else, but others have complained of noise too so who knows. My Be 100DLX was noisier last time I used it, but again probably power, interference or ground loop issue and not actually the amp. YMMV
It definitely is less punchy. Not as much weight in the notes. I have a 1959HW,77 2204 and an 82 4104. They are the best at what they do, but the JVM offers good utility and function and sounds good in its own way. On the OD channels the gain never goes much past 9 so noise no an issue for me. That is plenty of gain for me. I would like to hear the JS version of the JVM.
JS version is pretty cool. The mid-gain tones have a nice character to them...But they neutered the high gain sounds, noticeably less aggressive on OD1 and OD2.
Thanks for reading that long winded review, and the the kind words regarding the fire. About your question: I'm in the minority, but I like them both equally and they are different enough that they both have something to offer. The OD1 Orange is dryer, has great clarity and upper-mids and has more of that classic Marshall high gain vibe...almost like a boosted 800. And OD2 Red is great as it has more weight in the lower-mids and is more saturated. It comes across as thicker, more modern and more forgiving than OD1. I use a lot of gain at living room volumes, but back it off when cranking up the volume. At first I really preferred OD1 Orange...Now it's really a toss up. Below are my current low-volume settings on OD1 and OD2:
It's an interesting dynamic that occurs on OD1 and OD2 with the JVM410H. Just as you get past 1 o'clock on the gain dial, the tone become noticeably darker, the compression starts to really have a negative impact on the tone and the response becomes "softer"...generally lacking attack and aggression. The good news is that 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock is plenty of gain; even for someone like me that tends to be a little over that top in this regard.Fuck me. That's interesting as I find OD1 to be generally leaner in the low frequencies, clearer and tighter...and OD2 to be thicker, low mid heavy and more compressed.
Those were my experiences as well. OD1 in yellow mode with gain around 11am (like in your other post) was modded Marshall city to me.
