I also have an Ampeg vh140 (combo version) that has the stock upgraded speakers in it. the Celestion g12t-100 and they are kick ass speakers. There was a reason Ampeg choose them for that amp. Much better bottom end in my opinion than the Vintage 30's.
killer highs that are not piercing. They sound fantastic cranked up. I would be looking for a set of those. can they do crunch? Hell yes! the British made ones for sure.
As a side note, if you are going for the old school Death metal thing you should try to get your hands on a Boss HM-2 heavy metal pedal made in Japan. With an Ampeg vh140 plus the celestion G12t 100's and a HM-2 you will make any Swedish Death metal fan cringe with ENVY!
