Ok peeps, here's what I'm pondering. I have a 2x12 cab that can be semi open or closed. Here's the speakers I have.

WGS Veteran 30
WGS ET65
Celestion Greenback
Celestion Blackback

I'd like to get your opinions about what speaker combination would work best, along with closed or open back. I'm playing through a 5150 iii 50 watt head. Mostly classic and heavier rock up through the 90s. I'm a huge VH fan boy, but something about the 2 Celestion with the closed back just isn't doing it for me.

Veteran 30+ET65, put the 2x12 vertical with the ET-65 on top.

Then you'll have chunk, punch, less harshness to the mids up top and a better matching volume wise than combining a V30 with a Greenback (4-5dB difference!).

For classic and heavy rock I would think the Greenback and the Blackback in an open back cab would really get the job done.

Your db difference is off depending on which Greenbacks you're referring to. The reissue Greenbacks and V30s are only 2dbs apart. I'm running that combo in my 4x12 with the Greenies on top, V30s on bottom, and I don't hear one speaker over powering another. Certain Greenbacks are 100dbs. The only Greenback that's 4dbs away from the V30 is the 20 watt (96db) Greenback (EVH and Heritage). Fwiw, Celestion recommends no more than 2db difference between speakers when mixing.

That's what's in it now, but with the back closed. It seems too harsh. Plus, one speaker over powers the other.

What kind of cab? That's probably part of the problem. And 5150 amps can seem trebly and fizzy. Because they are. I used to slant my cab slightly and stand a little to the side. That way I didn't hear the fizz. It was killing me for a while and I almost gave up and tried a different amp. Then I came to my senses. Greenback style speakers soundthe best with a 5150. I'm betting your a Mrashall 1960b with Vintage 30s guy. Some just like that setup better.

It's a custom 212 cab that I had made. Slanted baffle.

Try the Greenback in the top position and ET-65 in the lower position. Or my aforementioned combo ET-65 (top), Veteran 30 bottom.
The Blackback will probably be the harshest of the 4 speakers, followed by the Veteran30, depending on how well they're broken in.

Ever try a matching pair in the cab?

I have never had a 2x12 and I am an avid speaker mixer in the 4x12's but when I read this thread I wonder what a matching pair would be like for you.

I've got a boatload of different speakers around (and multiple 2x12's) and have done lots of mixing.
To me, in most 2x12's, the mixing brings back more qualities than using a matched pair.
