1. always try to play with players that are better than yourself. 2. sell your computer

I agree wholeheartedly with the first but not with the second. Theres a wealth of free info out there on the WWW to help you out. I definitely agree onthe gear thing and gear forums; Dont get it in your head that you need better gear in the beginning, Learn first, upgrade later..

When I started out in 1983, I would have gone crazy to be able to get hold of a pod/zoom/vox-etc device that let you practice with headphones. And my parents would`ve loved it :D

Nowadays you can get GREAT sounding stuff for beginners for a song. A decent guitar, a small amp, and a multieffect- Good enough until you start playing in a noisy band. Play play play! Use every possible moment to sit down with the guitar and try to play something you don`t master. Start slowly, until it`s a part of you, and speed it up in increments.

here's my suggestion

spend the least amount of time as you can on these boards...LOL..you'll get sucked into gear and tone chasing which will take away from you just trying to play and get GOOD....

get good, play lots....upgrade gear later....

develop your ears as much as you can..don't rely on tab..especially internet tab cause it's usually incorrect....when you can learn songs by ear and vamp over most anything thrown at you, then you're REALLY useful in a band situation
+1

Always have something new you are working on. Different scales or modes, chords, arpeggios etc. in all the poistions.

Record yourself. This will make you more aware of how well you are excecuting your scales, arpeggios etc... and will help you to gain accuracy and loose slop.

Don't ever be afraid to jam with other people. Even if you suck and they suck, it will make you a better play much quicker than not.

Greatest thing I did for my playing was playing with other people. And monitors....monitors are good. (Gotta hear yourself! )

I improved more in 1 year of jamming in a band than I did in my first 7 years combined rockin out in Madison Square Bedroom.
