I agree wholeheartedly with the first but not with the second. Theres a wealth of free info out there on the WWW to help you out. I definitely agree onthe gear thing and gear forums; Dont get it in your head that you need better gear in the beginning, Learn first, upgrade later..
When I started out in 1983, I would have gone crazy to be able to get hold of a pod/zoom/vox-etc device that let you practice with headphones. And my parents would`ve loved it

Nowadays you can get GREAT sounding stuff for beginners for a song. A decent guitar, a small amp, and a multieffect- Good enough until you start playing in a noisy band. Play play play! Use every possible moment to sit down with the guitar and try to play something you don`t master. Start slowly, until it`s a part of you, and speed it up in increments.
