I'm glad that James gave that up, I felt it was always an insecurity mask. To me that's something that did not really manifest until at least 1988, two years after Cliff tragically died. I'm guessing that Cliff's death made him feel even more abandoned like with his parents, and exacerbated the trust & family issues he had while growing up. He would have been better off checked into mental health back then rather than the bottle. It's like "oh I have to be the lone tough wolf'- in fact it wasn't until then or 1990 or so he started signing his name as "JAYMZ", an alter ego. During the 1980s his autograph was just his name in running writing like on a cheque.
I feel like James is more like how he was during the 1980s- minus the shyness and therefore the alcohol.
Just himself with the cheeky humour.
