New Metallica released today

James is the only one who changed something of his personality, which is that tought fake guy personality he had back then because of his trust issues. But he is still passionate with a sense of humour.

I'm glad that James gave that up, I felt it was always an insecurity mask. To me that's something that did not really manifest until at least 1988, two years after Cliff tragically died. I'm guessing that Cliff's death made him feel even more abandoned like with his parents, and exacerbated the trust & family issues he had while growing up. He would have been better off checked into mental health back then rather than the bottle. It's like "oh I have to be the lone tough wolf'- in fact it wasn't until then or 1990 or so he started signing his name as "JAYMZ", an alter ego. During the 1980s his autograph was just his name in running writing like on a cheque.

I feel like James is more like how he was during the 1980s- minus the shyness and therefore the alcohol.
Just himself with the cheeky humour.

After all that happened in the last 20 years, hearing something like Atlas, Rise! or Moth Into Flame makes me extremely happy. This is old Metallica as how it should be.

No offense, but I see so many here refer to the Black album in reference to Metallica's last greatest but IMHO the Black album was the start of the downhill trend in terms of the music I care to hear from the band. AJFA was the last great album from Metallica.

I agree.
AJFA has to be my favorite Metallica record of all time.
Especially from a creative stand point.

Im not even a big fan of the Black Album to be honest.

Ever since Bob Rock came into the picture, everything went downhill.
Im not even gonna get started on Load and Re-Load.

Yep. AJFA rocked. Still rocks. I think my favorite(s) though are MOP, RTL, and Kill Em All. Especially Kill EM All for the rawness of it.

Just couldn't get into these two. There's a few decent tunes in there, but for the most part I didn't really listen to anything past AJFA until St. Anger came out. Something about that album I like.

I could never get into LOAD. I like some of the songs like "Until It Sleeps" and "Hero of the Day" but is not the same band to me. It is like Van Hagar versus Van Halen or something.

I am glad they had that period of growth though because I think it allowed them to eventually get faster and heavier. I think every successful band has to do what they love....even if we hate it.

its called they are doing because they love it. Do you honestly think they need to release new music? they can tour off their past for the rest of their no problem so "doing it because its all they know" doesn't wash. If that were the case they would just go out every 6mths and play the same shit over and over and cash the cheque

There comes a point it life when you do lose your drive, happens to every one...then life becomes about doing stuff you enjoy

I think the various seasons in their record making has brought it full circle to Death magnetic and this release. The early days were exciting, energetic, raw, just incredible. Get to the "Black" album through the "Load" series and they were more structured, massively expanded their base and broke through all kinds of new ground which certainly enhanced the Metallica brand. St. Anger (to me) was a monumental record for all the non musical reasons. If it weren't for that fucking snare it would be 100 times better. I like some of the songs and riffs on that record. As messed up as that record is I see it as a snapshot of all the records and their dynamics trying to come together amidst all kinds of personal problems. That gets sorted on some levels and they "find" themselves going back to their musical roots with Death Magnetic and putting out a solid effort (in my mind) with that album. Just like when they hit their stride with Puppets I feel that are similarly in that same vein with this coming record. They have found their way, experienced some ups and downs, figured out what they like and want to do and here they are again. I have always seen it in snapshots and I don't think these last two records could have been made without the St. Anger phase/struggle. My $.02 anyway.

For me though, a lot of times people will say "Metallica isn't heavy anymore man, you should listen to the band "Rape the Priest and Nuns" those guys are heavy". I don't know some of these bands and to be honest, as soon as a growl comes out of the mouth, it is not the same type of heavy.

I grew up on Priest, Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Fastway, etc. I need a great voice, nice riffs, etc. I want to keep discovering new bands and want to like new music but I find it hard to get turned on to some of these groups. I know some are out there but just gotta dig.

I hear ya man. In my 40s as well and grew up on the same stuff but with the addition of some bands that lie on heavier side like Vader, Sepultura, Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Death, Obituary, Carcass etc. Even now I'm drawn to the more brutal stuff, but I still enjoy the shit out of the bands you mentioned that to me constitute the lighter side of metal. Was just listening to Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny and Rocka Rolla the other day and forgot how utterly amazing those albums are

This. And "Spit Out The Bone" is an instant classic. And yes Kirk has some very tasty stuff on here.The three singles are probably the weakest on the album.

Listened to a few of the leaked songs and will say I like them better then the 3 releases.

Went back and listed to St. Anger last night which I haven't in a long time, and I still find I really dig that album a lot. Could do without that fucking ever present snare though.

Yep....heard most of it....buying for sure!! Really good and some really, really great parts throughout. Im over lars' love of his syncopated snare hits.... but i am really diggin James' vocals and melodies...a different approach and i like. I have yet to listen to spit out the bone....but this album is damn good.... you can see and almost feel their new attitude and confidence right now....it seems like they really enjoy it again... and with this album, they should.
