You guys are like dogs with a bone when it comes to semantics! I kind of split the difference with what both parties are suggesting. Things can be too perfect - quantized, auto-tuned to death, squeezed and compressed to utter lifelessness. That kind of stuff doesn't sound human to me, and I don't enjoy it. However, I think it is disrespectful to any paying customer to not have your shit together when you go out there. Young Eddie was kind of like the rock version of Charlie Parker in the jazz world. His chops were so honed that he'd try to execute intricate ideas in a flash, and more often than not nail them. Total seat-of-the-pants flying by a guy who had the improvisational skill to pull it off. Got no problem with that. Go to any gig by a really good jazz artist and that's what you'd EXPECT to see. However, "Recent Eddie" either doesn't practice, or has lost some serious physical/mental ability due to self-abuse. If I spend money to see someone, I don't expect to see a clam-fest - I expect it to be apparent that they practiced and that the band has rehearsed. Perhaps this is what Jim is alluding to?

I agree with you, but that's why I bark at statements loaded with dogma on any side. I mean, this is the internets, it's serious bidniz.

Yeah the guys got talent and chops but this kind of stuff bores me to death.
I like risk takers that go for it like its their last note.

This is what I was getting at. I couldn't speak to what Jim was, but perhaps he'll chime in.

BTW - EVH just underwent serious hand surgery for a couple things included "twisted tendons", which sounds pretty ominous. Perhaps that explains things a bit since he was every bit as beaked back in '78-'82, but still was able to pull off so much amazing stuff...

-great playing? check.
-great execution? check.
-great tone? check....especially considering the "average" gear he used and how much we all obsess and spend on gear :D -even though
his is not a tone I'd go after.
-great melodies? check.

For me, he seems very automated, for lack of a better term. It just didn't do much for me besides the fact I could never play that way.

Indeed, you've summed it up very well. And sadly, when I see a great player in the midst of a clam fest, it seems like theres usually either drugs or booze as the cause.

Seeing that more than half the people in the world use drugs (including alcohol) daily how could it be a surprise ?

Ed is old. People do age at different rates. He has health problems. It is only a matter of time for all of us. No one is what they were. I am sure the other things (the life style) did not help. Sober or not he would be having problems I would think.

I have to admit that I dig the mistakes in the VH stuff, like DLR starting in early with his rap about the betty with lines in the back of her stockings.

Ed is 54. He isn't a kid anymore, but I hardly consider him "old".

Many die before that age because of health problems. It is not old .... but sure is not young. ..... and like I said people age at different rates.

It's all a matter of perspective. He's almost three years younger than me.

I did not mean years .... I have know people that were old by 35 and others that were young at 60.

Your right about perspective .... when I was 14 the girl next door came home from collage. She was 22. Since that time I have always joked that 22 is old.
