Noise Gates?

I picked up a boss NS-2 recently and it's ok, but not as powerful as the decimator pedal i used to have. I have to set the threshold all the way up to work how i want, the decay is kind of cool though, makes it a more natural effect. What do you guys use with your high gain rigs, and where do you set them in the chain?? I set mine in front of my amp, but last in the chain.

ISP Rack Unit...Last in in chain, in front of 5150. Best unit I have experienced.

ISP in front of the amp, last in the chain works best for me. Used to always use it in my previous band but now I use it as an effect. Using alot less gain in my current band. I have a few friends that run their ISP in the front of the amp and their NS-2's in the loop. Makes the amp completely silent.

If the amp isn't noisy, then in front, last in chain assuming I have a loop for my delay/reverb. If I'm using an amp without a loop, then it goes before the delay/reverb, after everything else. If the amp is noisy, in the loop before delay/reverb. If I'm using a volume pedal, it might first in chain if at all. Generally, I try not to use one at all. I do use it to single coil hum sometimes though, because I've greatly migrated over to telecasters these past few years.

Been using an ns2 for years up front, and if the amp doesn't have a built in gate I use a decimator in the loop.

Dwisted got a decimator 2 that i tried recently and I think its better than them all.

Note, these are the only pedals I use. No delay or chorus etc.

Definitely not for me/my rig setup!
Just like the OP said - NS2 feels like a more natural effect, very balanced. ISP was way too drastic for me, almost choking the sound.
But yes, I saw rigs that just don't work well with anything but the Decimator.

In the past I had used an original Decimator or an NS-2. I liked the Boss better, but I'd assume the newer Decimator with the loop could work just as well. I'd plug my guitar into the input, output to amp, then in the Boss's loop would go the noisy pedals. This way killed the noise the best for me without screwing with the attack and decay of the guitar. I also didn't have to turn the suppressor on and off depending on which other pedals were on. If you kept the suppressor at the end of the chain, always on, then the clean sound of the guitar would get chopped when set to cut the noisy pedals buzz. If you set it to sound perfect for the clean sound then there just was not enough reduction when a noisy pedal was engaged.

I haven't used one in years however.

i dont like them but understand why people do. i couldn't see using one with either of my amps, but i mod my amps to do what i want regarding gain and noise.

my issue is with tone suckage (and/or something always in line with my tone when it doenst need to be), and the thresh-hold NEVER seems to be able to be set to my liking on any that i've tried, unless i want that SUPER CLAMP gated effect, but i rarely use that, and i rarely use enough gain that i cant control it either with my volume knob or by stepping back and away from my rig..

i DO however use the built in one in my gsp2101 with the grunge distortion settings, and even then at times, it drives me up the fuckin wall, and i usually end up leaving it off or open, until i need it on or want that perfect silence.

i guess it's a double edged sword at best....most times i find myself stepping on the bypass button when i need silence though. i think i outgrew the noisegate.

I started using an NS2 that I had laying around, and that thing is totally a tone choke. I was going straight in, no other pedals, to the front of the amp. I was jamming at my drummers place, and I'm guessing that since his house is old and has kinda crummy electrical, I could use the pedal to quiet it down. Well I threw it in, and it calmed it down but there was a massive change in tone. Pinch harmonics would get buried, the top end sounded kinda weird, it felt like I wasn't loud.

Then I kept trying to adjust the threshold. Dialing it back so that I came through, but having it up so that it did it's job.

I'd really like to try a decimator, but I'm gonna give putting it in the loop a shot too.

Guess i'll stick with the ns-2 for now, but i want to give a Decimator 2 a try sometime. I also don't have a problem with the pedal being a tone sucker, my signal remains fairly unaffected with that pedal.

I've heard things about newer versus older NS2's and how they're wired/built. The older, obviously being the better one. Have no idea when mine was from. It def choked the shit out of my tone. I was ready to deal with the noise just to have my guitar sound the way it should.

I switched from the NS2 to the ISP and then back again. I couldn't get the ISP dialed in.... User error I am sure
